As schools continue to put the finishing touches to their recruiting classes, there are still several hidden gems among the 2024 class, who I believe can make an impact at the next level. So, I started the “DON’T SLEEP” series, highlighting some sleepers in the 2024 class.
This time, I am bringing the “Don’t Sleep” series to the Hawkeye State as I look for some uncommitted hidden gems in the senior class.
Cyrus Courtney Cyrus Courtney 6'1" | 190 lbs | WR Cedar Rapids Kennedy | 2024 IA | 2024 | WR | Cedar Rapids Kennedy | 6’1″ 190 lbs
Senior receiver Cyrus Courtney Cyrus Courtney 6'1" | 190 lbs | WR Cedar Rapids Kennedy | 2024 IA played a huge role in one of Class 5A’s more prolific passing attacks. Cyrus ended the year as the receiving yards leader in 5A with 66 receptions for 1,056 yards and scored 11 receiving touchdowns. Cyrus projects best as an X-receiver, with the versatility also to play inside/slot. He’s a strong receiver who can use his size and physicality to take advantage of mismatches in coverage. Cyrus is super tough with strong hands at the catch point and displayed great concentration throughout the catch process. Courtney isn’t necessarily a “torcher,” but he does have solid speed that can stress defenses vertically and force defenders to respect him as a deep-ball receiver. Cyrus is a great route runner with a good football IQ, as he’s often able to create separation against man coverage and fill in empty pockets in the defense. Great job locating the ball in the air on deep passes. A productive and proven receiver who could boost a WR room at the next level!
Miles Parlet | 2024 | RB | Iowa City | 5’9″ 190 lbs
Iowa City running back Miles Parlet had a breakout year as he helped spearhead the Lil’ Hawkeye’s rushing attack. Miles toted the rock 221 times for 1,388 yards and scored 13 rushing touchdowns. Parlet isn’t a huge back, but he surely plays like one, using his powerful, compact frame to punish defenders. Miles is a tough runner between the tackles who displays excellent balance even when taking on contact. He’s not a super flashy runner, but he does exhibit solid twitch to make defenders miss in the box. Miles had several runs where he flipped the field by finding cutback lanes and exploding through his change of direction. Great acceleration as he nears the open field. He showed that he can be used as a receiving back, notching 18 receptions for 168 yards and one receiving touchdown.
Treyton Travis | 2024 | ATH | Baxter | 6’1″ 170 lbs
Baxter’s Treyton Travis exploded onto the scene as a two-way star for the Bolts. Treyton hauled in a whopping 103 receptions for 1,430 receiving yards and 24 receiving touchdowns (all of which led the state). Offensively, Treyton is a player that many coaches would like to have on their team because of his versatility and playmaking ability. You can feed Treyton the ball in several ways to try to get him in open space and let him work his magic. He’s great with the ball in his hands and can tack on extra yardage after the catch. He can make tough, contested catches in traffic. Travis also did a stellar job on the defensive side with 63.5 tackles, 2 TFLs, a fumble recovery, and six interceptions. Overall, Treyton is a fantastic athlete who can be effective on either side of the ball at the collegiate level.
Batpiny Riak| 2024 | DL/EDGE | Bondurant-Farrar | 6’3″ 200 lbs
After watching Batpiny’s senior tape, I was very surprised to see that he was still unoffered at this stage in the recruiting process. Batpiny had a tremendous senior season, breaking out for 38 tackles, 13 TFLs, and ten sacks. He was a dominant EDGE presence, showing great twitch and finesse when rushing the QB. He has a quick first step, plays his hands well, and can get a nice bend off the edge. Batpiny has nice length for an EDGE rusher and could easily add more muscle to his frame once he gets to college. Dangerous player with a massive ceiling!
