Class 6A Final Four: Kansas Sub-State Preview

It's time for the sub-state round in Kansas and there are four teams in each classification ready to battle it out for berths in the state championship games.   Here is a look at the sub-state match-ups in Class 6A and prospects hoping to finish the season with two more victories.   Blue Valley (7-4) at Gardner-Edgerton (10-1) – Gardner-Edgerton is the No. 1 seed in the east and reached the sub-state round with a 29-6 win over Blue Valley Northwest. Blue Valley is the No. 6 seed and is coming off a 42-21 sectional round win over No. 2 seed Olathe North.   [player_tooltip player_id='733500' first='Bravin' last='Powell'], QB, 6'4”, 200, Gardner-Edgerton, ‘25   Powell is a physical specimen who can play multiple sports and could be a college prospect in three sports. He is a big pocket passer for the Trailblazers who can also run. He accounted for more than 1,700 hundred yards of offense and for 25 touchdowns through the first nine games.   Randy Singleton, WR'CB, 5'11”, 170, Gardner-Edgerton, ‘24   Singelton has a breakaway speed and is extremely athletic. He has nice hands a runs solid routes. During Gardner's first nine games, he had 22 receptions for 454 yards and seven touchdowns.   [player_tooltip player_id='676526' first='Christopher' last='Aiello'], QB, 6'2”, 185, Blue Valley, ‘25   The Tigers have a prototypical old-fashioned pocket passer. The junior quarterback has thrown for over 1,500 yards. He does a great job of managing the offense and moving the chains. He is a smart player and will only get better with increased experience.   [player_tooltip player_id='826371' first='Martell' last='Buchanan'], DB, 6'2”, 180, Blue Valley, ‘24   Buchanan is a tackling machine and can play either safety position. He has racked up more than 100 tackles and has a couple of interceptions. Buchanan is ranked No. 41 in the Kansas Class of 2024 by Prep Redzone and has committed to play for North Dakota.   Derby (10-1) at Washburn Rural (11-0) – Washburn Rural is the final undefeated team left in Class 6A after a 35-14 win over Wichita East. The No. 1 seed in the west will face the Derby Panthers. Derby knocked off the defending state champion Manhattan Indians 23-21 in the last round.   [player_tooltip player_id='145512' first='Derek' last='Hubbard'], RB, 5'8”, 165, Derby, ‘24   Hubbard is a running back with great instincts. He is a threat to catch the ball out of the backfield and makes solid reads and cuts. He has rushed for over 917 yards through 11 games and has scored 13 touchdowns. He is ranked No. 34 by Prep Redzone in the Class of 2024 rankings.   [player_tooltip player_id='570288' first='DaSaahn' last='Brame'], TE, 6'6”, 225, Derby, ‘25   Brame is a huge target in the Panthers' offense. He moves really well for his size and has great hands. Through 11 games he has made 39 receptions for 807 and 12 touchdowns. He is a beat in the red zone and has 12 touchdowns. He is currently the No. 2 ranked player in the Class of 2025 in Kansas.   Kingston Leonard, FS, 5'10”, 175, Washburn Rural, ‘25   Leonard is a big-time playmaker. The junior defender through 10 games had 53 total tackles, three of which were for a loss of yardage. He has seven interceptions and seven pass break-ups. He has great closing speed and brings the wood when he makes tackles.   [player_tooltip player_id='145519' first='Branton' last='DeWeese'], QB, 6'0”, 185, Washburn Rural, ‘24   DeWeese is having a huge season. He threw for 160 yards and two touchdowns in Rural's sectional win over Wichita East. Through the Blues' 11 games, he has thrown over 1,600 yards and 27 touchdowns. He has also scored seven touchdowns on the ground. He has an accurate arm and can throw a deep ball.
