Who stood out on their island? Who was able to run with the talented receivers during the State Championship series? We saw multiple athletes that look like they have what it takes to be able to cover receivers, break up passes, and create turnvoers thanks to different blends of skill sets. We wrap up our position specific standouts with a look at the CBs/safeties who stood out at State. Make sure to know these athletes.
Stats: 2 Tackles, 4 PBUs, 1 INTrnMurphy ended his HS career by playing out of his mind, and proved that I have been sleeping on him. You can bet we are going to see him move up the overall rankings, and positional rankings as we get into our update. The safety made plays at every level of the field. They could count on him to attack when he read run, and make sound tackles. Against the pass, Murphy did a great job playing a deep zone. He was quick to read the QB, and closed on the ball rapidly. His timing to break up the pass was spot on all night long. Monreal could even be relied on in one on one coverage thanks to his loose hips and quick feet so he could change direction. Don’t sleep on the Milwaukee Marquette product. Check out the film.

Dominick Walters
Dominick Walters
Stats: 7 TacklesrnA sophomore who I had heard great things about coming into State was Franklin’s safety Dominick Walters. The underclassman put together a dominant season making tackles, breaking up passes, and creating turnovers. The football IQ of Dominick is already very high. You watch him quickly process the play, find the ball, and then show off the physical tools. Tools that include next level acceleration/closing speed and change of direction that allows him to put himself in passing windows or run in man coverage with receivers. Walters also has great instincts, especially for his age. This is looking like a special player who will debut very high in the new rankings update this winter.
Stats: 3 Tackles, 1 INT, .5 SacksrnIn the toughest defensive battle of the State Finals, Roger did his part to keep a loaded Stratford offense in check. He made his biggest play just before halftime when he ended a drive that was looking promising with an INT. Roger showed the play speed to be able to get deep with a receiver or cover ground, like he did on the sack. Roger is an under the radar senior DB to check out.
Stats: 5 Tackles, 1 PBUrnPatrick is one of my favorite WI DBs. The senior has elite size that gives him the versatility to line up at CB or safety at the next level. O’Brien plays CB in HS, but his zone awareness is another reason why I like him at safety. PJ is quick to see receivers entering and can change direction to close on them and make catches difficult. The big DB is also a good tackler. This is one of the biggest steals in the state at this point in the recruiting process. Give him a look.

Stats: 6 TacklesrnWaunakee didn’t need the long CB to lock down receivers during the state championship game, but they did need him to step up and be a force against the run. Badger attacked the edges all day long, and it was great to see Bova not be afraid to do the dirty work. Bova was able to use his size and strength to get off blocks, and has the agility to not be shook in one on one tackles in space. The long senior CB is a well rounded prospect to watch.
Cole Tichy
Cole Tichy
Stats: 4 Tackles, 1 TFL, 1 FF, 1 INTrnDarlington-Stratford was a dogfight that came down to the very last play. Tichy was a key piece to the Stratford secondary and defense that held Darlington in check. The 5’10” DB was all over the field. He was jumping routes and showing hands to make the INTs. He was also a good tackler who was able to get his hands on the ball. Cole could also be counted on to attack off the edge and make plays behind the line of scrimmage.
Stats: 2 Tackles, 1 INTrnWe wrap up with a sophomore CB. We have him at QB, but Streit found a way to make an impact this year as an underclassman on varsity. Things are looking good for the sophomore. He does everything you need in a CB. Tucker will fill against the run, get off blocks, and make tackles. He also is quick to read the QB’s eyes and jump routes with soft hands. Streit will be one to watch over the next few years to see how he develops.
