We couldn’t go without one more regular season honor for our Lowcountry Mr. Football nominee. Zion Dobson finished the regular season with a bang on Friday, putting up 273 yards and 5 touchdowns on 27 carries. It’s been a total breakthrough year for the senior back, putting his quickness, power, and tenacity all together for a dominant campaign. He concludes the regular season with a whopping 1,843 yards and 26 touchdowns as prepares for a promising 2A playoff run.
Highlights
The Summerville Green Wave flexed their muscles to clinch the Region VII-5A crown on Friday, and standout running back Trae Green helped lead the way. Green was more than just good in the clincher, rushing for 226 yards and three scores on 23 carries. A workhorse with his quick legs and excellent vision, Green is an explosive and physical back who can burst through the hole and quickly anticipate where defenders will be to make quick cuts and dart upfield. He’ll be relied upon to kickstart Summerville’s lethal offense when the playoffs begin this week against River Bluff.
Josh Bond
Josh Bond
An underrated spark of Bluffton’s growing defensive core, Josh Bond made quite an impact in Friday’s regular season finale against Colleton County. He was a monster at linebacker, recording 7.5 tackles including an impressive three sacks against the Cougars to help Bluffton clinch a home playoff game this week. A hard-working player who has taken a giant step forward this year, Bond has become a high-energy standout who has complemented the skill of nearby Jeremiah Curry Jeremiah Curry 6’0″ | 205 lbs | LB Bluffton | 2024 State SC . Bond could very well be the difference-maker again to help the defense get the stops they need to beat Richland Northeast in front of his home crowd.
Henry Rivers has proved a lot throughout his freshman season, but his comeback effort against a strong Cane Bay team was his most impressive yet. Rivers showed his poise and clutch factor late, throwing for 308 yards and two touchdowns to help rally his Stags to victory. He’s looked the part of a polished passer with the alertness and mental fortitude to get it done when it matters. He was aided by a 233-yard game from receiver Kevin Boone, serving as the main target valve who delivered high-octane athleticism with the ball in his hands. It’s a connection that could be hard to stop when the playoffs begin this Friday.
Highlights
The ‘Hawks got the job done on Friday to secure the Region VIII-3A crown, and it was Kevon Rivera again who led the charge. Against a solid Beaufort run defense, Rivera broke loose for 237 yards and two touchdowns on 37 carries. A strong and powerful back with quick cuts and lateral movement, Rivera’s paths downfield can be hard to anticipate. He’s even tougher to bring down in the open field with his ability to plow through tackles at 5-10 and 220 pounds. He’s a complete workhorse running back who will be a handful for anyone to stop in the postseason, and could make Hanahan a dark-horse threat to play deep into November.
Rodney Barr’s Jaguars have taken a giant leap forward in 2023 with five regular-season wins, and they’ve been excelling with Maurice Brown under center this year. An explosive runner who has made some terrific strides in the passing game, Brown threw for 208 yards and two scores on Friday while adding 56 rushing yards on nine carries to power the Jags to a 24-20 win over Allendale-Fairfax. He’s been a big-play producer with his quick cuts and acceleration to make defenders miss with the strength to fight through tackles and battle to move the sticks. The passing game has been the key story this year, improving his accuracy and touch downfield to open up the offense even more and make himself tougher to predict. An electric playmaker who can make something out of nothing at a moment’s notice, Brown has become a star over in Ridgeland for an exciting Jaguars squad.
It was a defensive struggle for most of the way in Charleston, but James Island’s dynamic run game proved to be the difference as the Trojans captured the Region VII-4A title. Amontrae Scott was the catalyst, turning 15 carries into 125 yards and a touchdown to top Lucy Beckham. He’s an excellent hard-nosed north-south runner with excellent vision to pick up holes quickly and find open grass. Moving over from wideout to the backfield on Friday, Scott has become a dynamic playmaker who can also help out in pass blocking at times. He provides instant energy and relentlessness no matter the role and should be instrumental to the Trojans as they begin their playoff run.
