With rankings on the line, the #2 Mica Mountain faced off against the #3 Canyon Del Oro, as ranked by the AIA. A roller-coaster of emotions, the game was back and forth, with each team pushing themselves to the limits. Ultimately, it was Canyon Del Oro who clinched a nail-biting victory, edging out Mica Mountain by a close score of 17-15. Let’s shine the spotlight on 7 of the star prospects who made this game the spectacle it truly was.
Canyon Del Oro’s Stars
Aaron Jacobsen
Aaron Jacobsen
Aaron Jacobsen is more than just a towering presence on the field; he’s a testament to what happens when finesse meets raw power. With the agility of a player half his size, his feet dance with purpose, always anticipating, always engaging. His ability to seamlessly connect with the linebackers speaks volumes about his game awareness, and his speed to be able to stay in front of them. The D-line found themselves outpaced and outplayed, getting bullied by Jacobsen’s sheer force. While the linebackers constantly grappled with Jacobsen’s ability to get engaged and keep driving his feet. But beyond the tactics and the game’s rhythm, what truly sets Aaron apart is his sheer passion and commitment. Every play, every moment he’s on that field, he doesn’t just participate; he dominates, leaving an impression that resonates.
Kayden Luke Kayden Luke 5’10” | 210 lbs | RB Canyon Del Oro | 2024 State AZ is the embodiment of defensive leader. With a fearless approach that sees him take on blocks at top speeds, there’s an inherent recklessness in his play that opponents find hard to predict. Yet, it’s his agility and razor-sharp reactions that make him an absolute powerhouse in thwarting the run game. Even with a robust frame, Kayden’s speed is impressive; watching him chase down ball carriers is like witnessing a predator chase its prey. While his offensive prowess as a runner can’t be overlooked – his sheer strength making him a daunting challenge for any would-be tackler – it’s defensively where Kayden truly sparkles. His undying determination and relentless drive to be where the ball is ensures that he’s not just a player in the game, but a force that can shape the outcome.
Gavin Bower
Gavin Bower
When you watch Gavin Bower on the field, you quickly realize he’s not just playing a game; he’s orchestrating a high-octane performance. Sporting an impressive build that combines both height and reach, Gavin is a genuine headache for any offensive lineman or tight end. His initial burst of speed from his stance is not just fast, it’s lightning-quick, making his bull rush seem almost like a force of nature. He was getting constant pressure when they needed it most, especially in the tense moments of the 4th quarter, as he sent the quarterback scrambling. His nuanced understanding of the game shines through as he adapts on the fly. He did a great job crashing down on run plays, while expertly angling wide to hunt down the passer when he dropped back. There’s an elegance to his agility, when he’d chase a play deep only to nimbly redirect back to the quarterback. Sure, sometimes his own speed would betray him, causing him to overrun a tackle by just a hair. But even in those moments, there’s no denying Bower’s impact.
Mica Mountain’s Stars
In a true defensive battle, Jayden Thoreson Jayden Thoreson 6’0″ | 175 lbs | QB Mica Mountain | 2025 State AZ was still able to shine with his play at the quarterback position. Comfortably agile on his feet, his technique on the run is undeniably refined, drawing power from a subtle yet effective hip twist. His football IQ is evident in his pre-snap reads, often knowing who’s going to come open based on the coverage he’s facing. Occasionally he hesitates, waiting for his receiver to come open, rather than relying on that pre-snap read. If he could just add a bit more anticipation to some of his throws, it could catapult his game to staggering heights. A particular 3rd and long pass early in the game, though not caught, was a testament to his skill – spotting the briefest of gaps in the zone coverage and delivering a strike to his receiver. As the final minutes dwindled, his stellar performance in the closing drive – the precision, the timely decisions, and the sheer command over the offense – painted the portrait of a quarterback who knows how to handle adversity.
Kason Colbert Kason Colbert 6’1″ | 225 lbs | LB Mica Mountain | 2024 State AZ isn’t just a running back; he’s a football poet in motion. At first glance, with his imposing stature, you’d expect him to be all about brute force. But watch him play, and you’re in for a surprise. The way he moves side-to-side showcases an agility that contrasts beautifully with his size. Every cut he makes, every sudden change in direction, it’s like watching an intricate dance – powerful yet graceful. Kason doesn’t sidestep when the need for some power comes; he charges head-on, becoming every defender’s nightmare. He can flatten you with his strength or just as easily drop you to the ground with a juke. Even when he’s gaining just a few yards, he ensures it’s a painful task for anyone trying to tackle him.
Jimmy Leon Jimmy Leon 6’3″ | 235 lbs | DL Mica Mountain | 2025 State AZ ‘s presence on the defensive front is nothing short of dominant. Throughout the game, he stood as an unwavering one-man-front against the run, proving to be the linchpin in the early defensive game plan. It’s not just raw strength, though he has plenty of that; it’s the artistry in his movements, the carefully honed techniques, and the finesse with which he sheds blocks that make him such a standout. His technical prowess and natural power show every time he’s on the field. Each play sees Leon engaging with opponents not just with brute force, but with a strategist’s mindset, often outthinking rather than just outmuscling. As I wrote about in “Tight End Takeover: Top 4A TEs“, on the offensive side, Jimmy’s blocking skills add a substantial punch to the run game. His unique blend of route-running precision coupled with remarkable speed, especially for someone of his stature, complements his blocking abilities. As the game reached its crescendo in the fourth quarter, it was clear he was their go-to, especially during crucial third downs and high-stakes red zone plays. What was more evident this game, than any of his others that I’ve watched, was his leadership. It was so clear that he was someone that the team looked to in the crunch time and he was a vocal leader throughout the night on both ends of the ball; an excellent trait to see.
Mikey Thoreson
Mikey Thoreson
Stepping into the tumultuous fray of a fourth-quarter lead with merely two points to spare, Mikey Thoreson came in and played really well. Despite being thrust into such a high-stakes situation, Mikey’s defensive instincts shone instantly. He didn’t just read plays; he dissected them, often making split-second decisions that showcased his innate football intelligence. What he might lack in size, he more than compensates for with an unyielding physicality, making his presence felt, especially when filling gaps to stop the run. His quickness and sharp instincts in coverage were evident, keeping pace with slot receivers with ease. He had his challenges when facing Aaron Jacobsen, the Canyon Del Oro tackle, but then again, he gave everyone a tough time throughout the entire game. All in all, Mikey’s performance under pressure was nothing short of commendable, standing tall when his team needed him the most.
