5A’s #4 Elgin has been absolutely lights out so far this season and they continued their dominant play on Friday night when they faced off with 4A’s #6 Weatherford and walked away with a 42-7 victory. Both teams started slow but once the Owls got rolling on offense, it was hard to slow them down. And on the other side, Weatherford’s offense had a tough time moving the ball against an Elgin defense that has been simply dominant through three games this season.
Elgin would score on their third possession of the game and that would give the Owls some momentum. Quarterback Tres Lorah Tres Lorah 6'0" | 195 lbs | QB Elgin | 2025 State OK found Brody Morrison on a 59-yard touchdown over the middle. Lorah found Morrison all by himself and he did the rest. Lorah would finish the game 12-21 for 227 yards and two touchdowns. But the Elgin running game is what allowed them to move the ball at will against the Weatherford defense.
Early in the second quarter, sophomore Ritson Meyer Ritson Meyer 6'1" | 200 lbs | ATH Elgin | 2026 State OK would rumble in from a yard out to put the Owls up 13-0. Meyer would finish with 12 carries for 88 yards and two touchdowns. He also made countless plays on the defensive side of the ball. Elgin led 13-0 at halftime and the story was the defense as they gave up just 16 yards on the ground and less than 100 yards of total offense.
The Owls would add to their lead early in the third quarter when senior running back Matt Lund Matt Lund 6'0" | RB Elgin | 2024 State OK scored on a 19-yard touchdown. And that’s really when the floodgates opened. Lund finished the game with 116 yards on 17 carries and a pair of touchdowns. Weatherford continued to struggle offensively and Elgin linebacker Colyn Donnelly would come up with a tackle in the end zone to force a safety halfway through the third quarter. Shortly after that, Morrison came up with an interception and then Meyer scored on their first play to put Elgin up 36-0 late in the third.
On the first play of the final quarter, Lorah threw his second touchdown of the game when he found Michael Adesola for a 45-yard score. Weatherford would avoid the shutout on the ensuing kickoff when Nick Jett Nick Jett 5'10" | 155 lbs | WR Weatherford | 2025 OK nearly took it all the way back for six. The Eagles would punch in a short touchdown run to make it 42-7. Elgin was very impressive on Friday night and they are hopeful to keep this momentum going into a tough district, starting next week.
ELGIN’S TOP PERFORMERS
The story of this game for us has to be Elgin’s defense completely shutting down Weatherford’s offense. And it’s hard to put a spotlight on one player when the whole unit, specifically the front seven, was dominant from the start. But junior linebacker Colyn Donnelly was flying all over the field throughout the night and showed why he’s a linebacker on the rise in the state’s 2025 class. The Elgin coaches mentioned him as a player to watch prior to the game and he certainly lived up to that on Friday night. Donnelly also made a big tackle in the end zone to force the safety in the third quarter. That was during the stretch of the game when the Owls were really putting this game away. We’ll be keeping an eye on him moving forward.
Highlights
It’s only week three and we’ve seen some really good running backs already but Elgin senior Matt Lund Matt Lund 6’0″ | RB Elgin | 2024 State OK is up there in terms of the hardest-running standouts in the state. The senior seemed to never get tired and he ended up leading the team in rushing. Lund would finish with 116 yards and a pair of touchdowns and it honestly could have been even more. Lund was also a safety net for Lorah as a receiver out of the backfield. The Owls have some weapons at wide receiver and Lorah is certainly a capable passer but there’s no doubt that this team is a run-first squad and Lund is excellent in that department. Fresh off a 200+ yard performance last week, Lund had an excellent night on the road in western Oklahoma as the Owls continue to build momentum.
We knew that sophomore Ritson Meyer Ritson Meyer 6’1″ | 200 lbs | ATH Elgin | 2026 State OK had a bright future but this was our first chance to see him in person and he certainly passed the eye test. Whether he was at running back or linebacker or even in special teams, Meyer goes all out every single snap and he seemed to never get tired. Meyer is the second part of that two-headed monster at running back with Lund. And these two are some of the hardest running players in the state. And a defense is going to have to try and tackle both of them all night and it’s inevitable they get worn down. Meyer also ran hard on special teams and was a big part of the front seven on defense that made life miserable for the Weatherford rushing attack. Meyer passed the eye test in a big way.
While the running game was the focal point of the offense, junior quarterback Tres Lorah Tres Lorah 6’0″ | 195 lbs | QB Elgin | 2025 State OK had a solid night throwing the ball. Lorah threw for well over 200 yards on 12-21 passing and his two touchdowns were big ones as the first was a 59-yarder that opened up the scoring and then he added a 45-yarder in the second half. Lorah is now in his third season as a starter for the Owls and he has a really good command of this offense. The running game absolutely wears down defenses and that’s when Lorah can do damage in the passing game. And the Owls have some weapons on the outside to get that done. This might be a run-first team but the Owls are certainly not one-dimensional and can be balanced when they need to be.
