IOWA CITY, Iowa – We’re less than two weeks away from the first high school football games kicking off. It promised to be another entertaining season in the Hawkeye State.
To get us prepared, we’re listing seven top players returning at each position in all seven classes. You can read about the positions we’ve covered at the links above.
We’re digging in on defense. Here are the Eight-Player defensive backs:
Garrison Motsinger, ’25, Bedford – Motsinger led players returning in 2023 with six interceptions last season. His Hudl and Max Preps pages only contain a few basketball clips, nothing from football. The hoops clips show off his quickness and athleticism that serves him well on the gridiron. Of his 31.0 total tackles in ’22, 27 were of the solo variety. On offense, he scored touchdowns rushing and receiving.
Kasey Hough, ’25, GTRA – Like Motsinger, Hough hasn’t posted any football highlights on his Hudl page. Hough picked off five passes a season ago. He racked up 57.0 tackles, 35 of which were solo. He added a receiving touchdown and a rushing score as a sophomore in ’22. He also recovered two fumbles.
Rason Grail, ’24, East Union – Grail also intercepted five passes last fall. He totaled 28.5 tackles (22 solo). He hauled in seven touchdown catches as well. On his junior highlights, we see a very talented two-way player. The film starts with him denting defenses as a receiver. His size and speed help him pick up yards after the catch. Those traits also play on defense, where he positions himself and reads the ball well in flight.
Dakota Heishman, ’25, BGM – Yet another Class of ’25 member on the list, Heishman delivered four interceptions with 28.0 tackles (20 solo, 3.0 for loss). During his sophomore highlight package, Heishman looks like he’s playing faster than most everyone else on the field. He reads and reacts quickly, breaking well on the ball. He’s a technically sound tackler who’s strong in run support.
Breckin Clatt, ’25, Colo-Nesco – We roll along with another member of the ’25 Class. Clatt picked off four passes as a sophomore a year ago. He racked up 75.5 tackles (59 solo), scored 11 touchdowns rushing, four touchdowns receiving, three touchdowns on kick returns and one on a punt return. His sophomore highlights do a nice job of showing us how he stuffed the stat sheet. On offense, he changes direction well and shows a good burst. He’s electric in the return game.
Brenner Sullivan, ’26, Woodbine – Sullivan’s Hudl page only features highlights of him playing offense. We see enough there to understand how he finished with 54.0 tackles (37 solo, 3.5 for loss) and two interceptions, including a Pick-6, as a freshman in ’22. He recorded a touchdown on the ground and four more receiving. He has good speed and lateral quickness. He appears to embrace contact.
Charlie Schaefer, ’24, North Iowa – Schaefer stands out for his physical style of play when watching clips on his Hudl page. He combines that with a good feel for the game on both sides of the ball and good speed. He recorded 52 tackles (39 solo, 3.0 for loss) and logged an interception. He scored a receiving touchdown and threw a scoring pass.
