IOWA CITY, Iowa – We’ve reached July. A new high school football season is right around the corner. It will be here before we know it.
To help get us prepared, we’re listing seven top players returning at each position in all seven classes. You can read about the positions we’ve covered at the links above.
We’ve reached the O-Line. We kick it off in Class 5A:
Kyle Rakers Kyle Rakers 6'4" | 290 lbs | OL Dowling Catholic | 2024 State IA , ’24, Dowling Catholic – The 6-foot-4, 290-pound Rakers is verbally committed to Kansas State after reporting scholarship offers from Iowa State, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma State, Purdue, Michigan State, Cincinnati, Illinois and others. The first clip on his junior highlight reel shows off his athleticism as he registers blocks on multiple levels in the same play, including one well down the field. It’s consistent with his propensity for playing through the whistle. He competes with excellent balance and with high-end physicality. He gets into the chest of his opponent quickly and does a nice job directing with his hands.
Jake Peters, ’24, Cedar Falls – Peters (6-3, 270) is a solid all-around athlete who impressed me as a basketball player last winter. You could see he’s athletic and agile (and a big human). He’s verbally committed to Nebraska after also claiming scholarship offers from Army, Navy, Coastal Carolina, Northern Illinois, South Dakota State, Columbia and others. Likely an interior performer at the next level, Peters shows off the traits that can make him successful there during his junior highlight package. He gets off the snap and drives into opponents fast. He does really well at going through blocking progressions, getting to guys on the second level and downfield when needed. He excels in run blocking and is solid in pass pro.
Braylon Jenkins, ’24, West Des Moines Valley – I noticed Jenkins right away when watching the Tigers play in The Dome last November. The 6-foot-4, 285-pounder oozes potential with a prototypical frame and athleticism. He reports scholarship offers from Wyoming, Miami (Ohio), Northern Iowa, South Dakota and others. Bigger schools are monitoring him, so a strong senior season could see more opportunities come his way. When watching his junior highlights, you see a guy with the potential to play inside or out. He does well in engaging defenders off of the snap and maintaining blocks if they don’t end in pancakes. He has good feet and uses his hands well.
William Stobbe William Stobbe 6'4" | 285 lbs | OL Waukee | 2024 State IA , ’24, Waukee – A North Dakota verbal commitment, Stobbe (6-3, 275) also reported scholarship offers from Illinois State, Yale and others. The Iowa Hawkeyes offered a preferred walk-on opportunity that he heavily considered. Physicality comes to mind when watching his junior highlights. He features more defensive than offensive clips at the front of the package. And he impresses on the inside of the D-Line. I could see him working there at the next level. I am more intrigued with him on the O-Line interior. The two-way versatility speaks to his athleticism. And he’s strong with good footwork.
Nick Brooks Nick Brooks 6'8" | 340 lbs | OL Cedar Rapids Kennedy | 2025 State IA , ’25, Cedar Rapids Kennedy – Brooks (6-7, 345) is returning to Kennedy this school year after time at Alpharetta (GA) St. Francis High. The big guy is one of the country’s top O-Linemen in this class. He reports scholarship offers from, among others, Iowa, Iowa State, Alabama, Georgia, Penn State, LSU, Michigan, Texas, Florida, Tennessee and Wisconsin. Strangely, I cannot find any video highlights of Brooks. If anyone knows where to find them, please point me in the right direction. Thanks.
Will Tompkins Will Tompkins 6'4" | 270 lbs | OL Cedar Falls | 2025 State IA , ’25, Cedar Falls – Another member from the Tigers on the list, Tompkins (6-4, 270) should become more of a household name this fall. He accepted invitations for visits at Iowa, Iowa State, Minnesota and Illinois this spring and summer. The Cyclones offered a scholarship last month. During his sophomore highlights, you can already see the high-ceiling potential. He gets off at the snap quickly, moves really well and knows how to get under opponents’ pads. The future is bright for Tompkins.
Brayden Harmon, ’24, Southeast Polk – Harmon (6-2, 250) earned second-team all-state honors from the IPSWA last season after the Rams won their second consecutive state title. He’s receiving some smaller school college interest so far, and could garner more with a big senior season. He’s not the biggest dude but you can see it doesn’t matter when watching his junior highlights from ’22. He’s definitely an inside guy. He’s a mauler in there. He’s quick and powerful. He reaches his blocks in good time and is adept at pulling.
