IOWA CITY, Iowa – July is flying by, which means a new high school football season is right around the corner. It will be here before we know it.

To help get us prepared, we're listing seven top players returning at each position in all seven classes. You can read about the positions we've covered at the links above.

We're digging in on defense. Here are the 3A linebackers:

[player_tooltip player_id='156632' first='Jaxon' last='Cherry'], '24, Webster City - Also a talented running back, Cherry (6-1, 210) destroys plans on defense. He totaled 61.0 tackles last fall with 52 of them being solo and 8.5 for loss. He added 4.5 sacks, and even averaged 35.7 yards on seven kick returns. His junior highlights open with defensive clips. He's a good looking linebacker - fast and physical. He gets downhill in a hurry while playing with nice balance. He also brings physicality to the offensive backfield.

[player_tooltip player_id='248019' first='Brett' last='White'], '24, Solon - A Baylor Baseball commitment, White (6-2, 205) earned first-team all-state honors from the IPSWA last season as a junior. He rolled up 77.0 tackles (43 solo, 15.0 for loss) with 3.5 sacks and three interceptions. He also rushed for 922 yards (8.3 YPR) and 12 touchdowns. Much of the film on his Hudl page is from his sophomore season. I've watched White in person during the last few years. He's a well-rounded linebacker, whose athletic and tough.

[player_tooltip player_id='156633' first='Jackson' last='Jaspers'], '24, Mount Vernon - Jaspers joined White as the only non-senior on the IPSWA all-state first-team last fall. He paced 3A with 110.5 tackles (80 solo, 14.0 for loss) in '22. He added 2.5 sacks and two interceptions on a Mustang team that reached the state championship game. He also stands out in wrestling with strong focus on that sport, which might be why he doesn't have any football highlights posted on his Hudl profile.

Connor Kamerman, '24, Sioux Center - Kamerman (6-1, 195) piled up 73.0 tackles (55 solo, 10.0 for loss) with 2.0 sacks last season. He also led the team in rushing yards (597) and touchdowns (8). His junior highlight reel reveals a linebacker who looks like he can consistently read and react. He looks prepared for what is coming his way and plays with good tempo. He shows strong tackling form as well.

[player_tooltip player_id='248026' first='Matthew' last='Sorfonden'], '24, Harlan - Sorfonden (6-0, 200) earned first-team all-district honors as a junior last season. He totaled 70.5 tackles (41 solo, 10.0 for loss) with 2.0 sacks, two interceptions and three fumble recoveries. The leading tackler for the '22 state champion Cyclones, Sorfonden looks like a complete linebacker during his junior highlights. He diagnosis plays quickly and is fast to the ball.

Kale Kinkaid, '24, Knoxville - Of Kinkaid's 62.0 total tackles in '22, 46 were solo and 3.0 went for lost yardage. He also recovered a fumble. Kinkaid (6-2, 180) doubles as a long snapper, and a good one at that. You can see him playing defense and special teams during his 11th-grade highlight reel. He's athletic and runs well, which helps at linebacker and in sprinting down the field for special teams' tackles.

[player_tooltip player_id='848057' first='Rayce' last='Heitman'], '25, Williamsburg - Heitman (6-2, 170) is an excellent athlete who stresses opponents whether he's catching passes as a receiver or wrecking offenses as a linebacker. If that wasn't enough, he delivers on special teams as well, which you can see during his sophomore highlights. He racked up 88.0 total tackles (70 solo, 7.5 for loss) for a Raider team that reached the Class 2A title game in '22.
