Continue ReadingAs we head into the middle of July, the 2023 high school football season is quickly approaching. To prepare for the upcoming season, I have taken the past couple months to preview some of the top talent in certain areas of Missouri. Continuing this trend, I have started a “Kansas City Players to Watch” series focusing on the top returning players at each position in Kansas City. After covering the offensive side of the ball, I have now turned my attention to the defensive side of the ball. With the defensive line and linebackers already being covered, I will wrap up the defensive side of the ball with some intriguing defensive backs in Kansas City to watch this season.
Diego Setser
Diego Setser
Diego Setser is an incoming senior defensive back that has caught my attention recently. He is a versatile defensive back, showing the ability to play on the outside at corner and as a safety. At corner, Setser does a great job of reading receivers and breaking on the ball with perfect timing to make a play on the ball. When lining up at safety, he does a great job of sitting in zone coverage and reacting quickly to put himself in a position to make plays. He also does a good job of coming downhill to provide support against the run and is a very reliable tackler in the open field. Diego doesn’t currently hold any offers but I expect some to come his way soon as he has the talent to play at the next level.
Michael Davis II
Michael Davis II
Michael Davis II is another incoming senior defensive back that has jumped onto my radar lately. He is a ball hawking safety that does a great job of reading the quarterback and route combinations. Once the ball is thrown in his direction, he breaks on the ball with perfect timing to make a play. He also plays with a ton of physicality, showing the ability to come downhill and lay hits on receivers to knock the ball loose. Davis has also shown the ability to cover slot receivers in man coverage, using his speed to open up and run with them to mirror their routes. He is also very reliable against the run, showing the ability to fill the lane and make tackles in the open field. Davis doesn’t currently hold any offers but he definitely has the talent to play somewhere at the next level and has received some college interest.
Micah Oder
Micah Oder
Another incoming senior defensive back that has caught my attention is Micah Oder from Rockhurst. Oder lines up at safety and has impressive ball skills. He has shown the ability to read the play and react to the ball quickly to put himself in a position to come away with interceptions. Oder is also reliable against the run, showing the ability to read the play and come downhill to make tackles in the open field. He also has proven to have special teams value, serving as a kickoff returner. Micah doesn’t currently hold any offers but I expect some to come his way during his senior year as he has the talent to play somewhere at the next level.
Gionni McBride Gionni McBride 6’2″ | 170 lbs | DB North Kansas City | 2025 State MO is an incoming junior defensive back that is very high on my radar. He lines up on the outside at corner where he is very impressive in man coverage. McBride plays with an impressive amount of physicality, showing the ability to jam receivers off the line of scrimmage. He also does a great job of opening up and running with receivers to mirror their routes. When the ball is thrown his way, he does a great job of breaking on the ball to either break up the pass or come away with an interception. Gionni recently picked up his first offer from Kansas and I expect more to come his way as he is a Power 5 caliber defensive back.
Highlights
To wrap up this list of talented defensive backs, I have Robert Collins Jr Robert Collins Jr 5’11” | 175 lbs | DB Staley | 2025 State MO . Collins is a promising incoming junior that thrives on the outside at corner. He has proven to have scheme versatility, showing the ability to thrive in both man and zone coverage. In zone coverage, he does a great job of reading routes and breaks on the ball with perfect timing to make a play. He has impressive ball skills, showing the ability to attack the ball at its highest point and come away with an interception. In man coverage, he does a great job of opening up and running with receivers to mirror their routes. He also has shown the ability to come downhill to make open tackles both after the catch and against the run. Collins has yet to receive any offers but I expect some to come his way soon as he has received some college interest and has the talent to play at the next level.
