With my running backs spreadsheet, a few players stand out as being underrated in the recruiting scene. From sure-fire D1 prospects to guys still waiting for their first offer, here are five underrated Running Backs I love!
Devon Pettus Devon Pettus 6'1" | 230 lbs | RB Canton | 2024 State MI | Canton | Hudl
Devon has recently picked up a ton of steam in the recruiting scene, yet I still think he’s underrated. With an offer from GVSU and a PWO from Central Michigan, people are finally beginning to take notice. Devon is a bruiser in the run game who sports great explosiveness, speed, and will run you over. This is a big, strong back with few true weaknesses. If I had to say one thing, it’s that I wish his overall vision was a bit more consistent, but other than that, this is a true MAC prospect in my eyes. I fully expect Devon to get some MAC offers very soon.
Colbey Reed Colbey Reed 5'10" | 195 lbs | RB Belleville | 2024 State MI | Belleville | Hudl
Colbey is another prospect who’s gained a lot of steam as of late. With offers from Tiffin, Davenport, and GVSU, it’s evident that he’s on the radar of plenty of DII programs. He’s a very well-rounded runner with great balance, vision, and can make things happen in the open field. In addition, Colbey is patient. He doesn’t always go full speed right away, as he lets his blocks develop before bursting and running wild. With just a bit of increased athleticism, he’s a Division 1 prospect.
Amarion Jenkins Amarion Jenkins 5'10" | 190 lbs | RB Flushing | 2024 MI | Flushing | Hudl
Amarion deserves some offers ASAP. He’s a running back with a lot of patience and open-field ability. He excels at running between the tackles and swiftly avoiding arm tackles with his athleticism. He looks quite fast and has some highlights where he outruns the opposing secondary. Amarion is, without a doubt, good enough to go DIII, and that’s exactly where I have him in my rankings spreadsheet. If you’re a DIII or similar coach reading this, please take a look at the highlights below!
JT Hartman JT Hartman 5'9" | 190 lbs | RB Forest Hills Central | 2024 State MI | Forest Hills Central | Hudl
JT is such a productive RB. He’s been getting significant Varsity playing time since his Sophomore season, and ever since, he’s been a key piece of the championship-contending offense. JT sports great balance and is able to absorb some hits and stay moving forward. He has decent athleticism that allows him to make some subtle moves in the open field to break arm tackles. He should get an opportunity to play at a DIII school sometime soon!
Sean Emerson Sean Emerson 5'8" | 180 lbs | ATH Seaholm | 2024 State MI | Seaholm | Hudl
Sean has always been an underrated back and he’s always been a guy I’ve pounded the table for. His role in the Veer is much different than most college offenses, but trust me, he can produce in any system. I especially see value with Sean in the receiving game, as he’s great in the open field. His film showcases an ability to run outside and make things happen in space. During offseason camps, he’s showcased impressive athleticism that has frankly surprised me quite a bit. I have a D3 grade on Sean and truly hope he receives a scholarship opportunity to play at the next level.
