The 2023 football season is right around the corner and we looked into our archive to check out some of the top players in the state that we haven’t had a chance to write about yet. This will be a new series where we break down the film of prospects that we haven’t covered yet or prospects that we haven’t written in over a year. Check back every week for a new batch of prospects as we take our “First Look.” Today, we’re breaking down four prospects from the state’s 2025 class.
Our first 2025 standout is one that is in the middle of blowing up right now on the recruiting trail. Two-way star Mason Woods Mason Woods 6’2″ | 195 lbs | ATH Iowa City West | 2025 State IA is an outstanding wide receiver and then turns around and plays safety. On offense, Woods is a highlight play waiting to happen. Time after time, Woods was making spectacular plays and catches that we just don’t see very often from sophomores. He has a unique blend of speed, playmaking ability and reliable hands that makes him a big problem to defend. Either he’s just going to run by a defensive back or come down with a contested catch more times than not. On defense, we were really impressed with his ability to be a ball hawk at safety. There were times when he was playing centerfield, waiting to see where the ball was going and the closing speed is outstanding.
It’s not very often that you see a two-way position combo of wide receiver and linebacker. But that’s the case with Williamsburg standout Rayce Heitman Rayce Heitman 6’1″ | 180 lbs | ATH Williamsburg | 2025 State IA and he did a good job on both sides of the ball. In fact, when we put on his film from last season, the first few plays were of Heitman in the return game and taking kicks back for touchdowns. Heitman had a massive impact on his team in all three phases of the game. We don’t think many schools will try to kick to him this fall. But at wide receiver, Heitman was a reliable playmaker that had strong hands and was tough to bring down after the catch. On defense, Heitman did a really good job of shedding blocks at the linebacker position and always had his eyes in the backfield, waiting to make a move.
The highest ranked prospect on this breakdown is tight end Thomas Meyer Thomas Meyer 6’5″ | 210 lbs | ATH Clear Lake | 2025 State IA and it’s easy to see why when you throw on the film from last season. Meyer is listed at 6’5 and he seems to be all of that on the football field. Meyer was incredibly productive last season as the beginning of his sophomore film is just touchdown after touchdown. And he was scoring in a variety of ways. He was catching jump balls in the red zone, which is the obvious result with his size and catching ability. But he also ran good routes and found plenty of open space to make plays after the catch and get into the end zone. He would line up as a tight end and also split out at wide receiver. Meyer has the attention of Big 12 and Big 10 schools and that’s not slowing down anytime soon.
Our final 2025 prospect is along the line of scrimmage. Cedar Falls offensive lineman Will Tompkins Will Tompkins 6’4″ | 270 lbs | OL Cedar Falls | 2025 State IA was an impressive prospect based on his film from his sophomore season. The first thing that stands out is his frame. He’s listed near 6’5 and we buy it as the big frame is something that a lot of college coaches can work with. He primarily played right tackle last season and he can move for a big man. He has quick feet and would explode out of his stance. Another thing that always stands out to us when watching offensive linemen is their desire to hit someone. Even when Tomkins would flatten an opponent, he was always quick to look around at who else he could move out of the way. Tomkins has a very high ceiling with his frame and skillset.
