When he gets space or needs to get the corner, he can accelerate and get up to full speed quickly. He is not a bruising runner, but if a would-be tackler doesn't get him squared up – the Gobblers' running back will not go down. He is most effective as a one-cut-and-go runner – using that acceleration out of his cuts to his advantage. Williams is also a dangerous punt returning – again using good speed and acceleration out of his cuts. He has great vision – especially at the line of scrimmage. His first step often creates tricky angles for offensive linemen to deal with as the junior is past the offensive linemen's shoulder before the blocker can get his hands on him. Along with that quickness, Thate uses his hands well to get off blockers. His hands are made even more effective because of the less-than-ideal blocking angles his quickness generates. He has already shown solid arm strength with the ability to stretch defenses – especially down the middle of the field. While he looks most comfortable throwing from the pocket, he has the arm strength to push the ball downfield while on the move. His speed allows him to cover a ton of ground in the secondary and makes him a threat running end-arounds from the wide receiver spot. If he gets in the open field, he can outrun angles defenders might think they have on him. He makes quick cuts when running routes, and that quickness also allows him to close on routes and stay with receivers on the defensive side of the ball. His combination of speed, feet, and vision allows him to find the gaps in the kick coverage and exploit them. The soon-to-be junior comes out of his cuts as quickly as you will see. He explodes out of his cuts. That speed and athletic ability make him a problem as a wide receiver. When he gets the ball in space – he basically becomes a return man – not the most advantageous situation for a defense.
