A player’s recruiting directly impacts their ranking as a prospect, but it is extremely rare for a player’s ranking to affect their recruiting. All rankings prior to the final updated list for the seniors are subject to change with each update.
The defensive back position group is made up of four different positions. Cornerbacks, free safeties, strong safeties, and nickel corners tend to get roped under the DB umbrella, but each position is unique and requires players to have specific techniques to excel in their role. It is not uncommon, however, for a defensive back to fill multiple roles within the secondary.
Many defensive backs get recruited to play different positions than the one they have on their high school team, making versatility and adaptability key traits for anyone member of the secondary. The five defensive backs below are radar low-flyers who have made our rankings list.
Even though Toledo is ranked in the top 30 of the class, he is still a relatively unknown prospect. He is a highly talented safety who excels in the box, giving him the potential to be a talented coverage outside linebacker if needed. His athleticism and speed enable him to defend against intermediate passes, while his physicality makes him an excellent run defender. In fact, his tenacious run defense allowed him to make the game-winning play where he forced and recovered a fumble inches away from the goal line in last season’s semifinal match-up. Toledo entered his sophomore year as a low-flyer on the radar but completed the season as a must-know 4A state champion.
Highlights
Keegan entered his sophomore year as an under-the-radar player on the watchlist before putting on an incredible performance last season, landing him just inside of the top 50 overall and just outside of the top five in the position group. He is a raw athlete with significant upside as a college prospect. He does a fantastic job at disrupting passes by playing the ball in the air and through the hands of the receiver.Keegan was a safety who converted to cornerback for his team, but it is likely that his skills in off-coverage will make him a legitimate safety prospect for college programs. Keegan’s physical playing style and instincts made him one of the better pass disrupters in the state.
Highlights
Kahre is an impressive athlete with budding potential as a must-know prospect. He is a high-motor player who flies around the field and initiates contact with the ball carrier. His ability to finish plays by securing his tackles makes him a reliable defender, which is mandatory for top-tier safeties. Kahre is the type of player whose talents, hustle mentality, and overall potential show up on film, making him a safety worthy of being added to college radars.
Rogelstad is a true standout with an extremely high ceiling. He is a downhill defender who embodies the role of a true safety because of his ability to cover as the deep man over the top, lock onto the slot receiver and take the correct angles to reach the flats, and line up in the box as an extra defender to play against the run. Rogelstad’s impressive speed and physicality helped him set an extremely high bar for himself, putting him on pace to exceed expectations by potentially having one of the more noteworthy junior seasons and becoming a breakout prospect.
Highlights
Shaw is an interesting prospect who has shown he possesses the potential to be looked at as a possible recruit for the hybrid DB/OLB role for a program looking to add depth to its dominant defense. He is listed as a safety, but he has the skills needed to line up as a cornerback and use impressive awareness to play in coverage. Shaw has the frame and physicality that could make him a viable option for multiple positions within a defense, which is what makes him a player worthy of interest from college programs in need of a plug-and-play athlete.
