This week, we’re taking a look at three dynamic receivers who can run different kinds of routes while showing off their speed and agility. We’re also taking a look at a cornerback who has impressive technique.
KJ Asbury, Philip Simmons (2024)
If you want a battering ram who is hard to tackle, Asbury is your guy. He will frequently line up and take the direct snap and once he gets into the open field, look out. He’s patient in the hole waiting for his blocks to develop while at the same time having a great combo of speed and power – he will flat out run you over. He can line up at wide receiver and do the same thing on jet sweeps.
Ra’el Senghor, Spartanburg (2024)
Senghor is one of those wide receivers that are tough to bring down once he gets into the open field. Even when you think you have an angle on him, he has the shiftiness in space and ability to break tackles to turn a 5-yard gain into a 15-yard gain or more. He has great hands and knows what to do with the ball in his hands. We saw different route combos in watching his film – he can beat you deep, on a quick out route or a throw to the sideline. He will be interesting to watch in the Upstate in 2023.
Jauron Bennett Jauron Bennett 5'11" | 175 lbs | DB Sumter | 2024 State SC , Sumter (2024)
Bennett is as impressive as they come at the cornerback position. Getting open against Bennett is a challenge because of the leverage he has and his technique. He doesn’t allow the receiver to get inside of him (i.e., a quick slant) and get a quick completion. His ability to run with receivers is also impressive as well – he rarely trails receivers and even if they have the slightest separation, he has the ability to recover quickly and knock the ball away. Colleges are starting to take note as he received an invite to Junior Day at Gardner Webb University on March 31.
Siah Mack, Ridge View (2024)
Mack lines up on the outside and can make things happen with the ball in his hands. What we saw on his film was an ability to be a threat in the quick screen game. He has sure hands and is tough to tackle in space. But what was probably more impressive is watching him block defensive backs down field, creating lanes for his other teammates to get extra yardage. He has violent hands and can drive defenders into the turf.
