There are plenty of South Georgia linebackers who had big sophomore seasons last year and could have breakout 2023 junior season next fall.
Who are they? Let’s take a look…
Bradyn Cook – Telfair County
A hard-hitting middle linebacker out of the small town of McRae, Cook is without a doubt one of the more underrated linebackers in South Georgia. A lean, powerful linebacker with a D1-level frame at 6-foot-0 215-pounds, Cook is a versatile linebacker who can play in the middle or on the EDGE. He has some length to his frame and can swallow up smaller running backs with ease. He can come down-hill with some force and is one of the toughest, strongest tacklers in the area. There’s a lot to like about his game and he should only get better next season as a sophomore. His film was impressive as a sophomore and he could see some real D1 interest come his way with a strong junior season in 2023. He was physically imposing last year, so if he continues to work hard in the weight-room he could have another big season with the possibility of really lighting up the stat sheet. He’s a true under the radar linebacker to know about.
Gabriel Bauman – Richmond Hill
A sure tackler and a high motor. That’s what you’re getting in the under the radar linebacker from the Savannah area. He may not be the biggest or fastest linebacker, but he’s fundamentally sounds, shows some side-to-sideline quickness, and knows how to wrap up tackle after tackler. He’s active, and he always finds himself in a position to make a play against the ball-carrier. A leader with a high football IQ, Bauman was one of the most productive 2025 linebackers across South Georgia last year. He came to play every Friday night and it showed in the box score. The 6-foot-0 190-pounder made 93 total tackles last season and 5 TFLs. He also added two sacks to his impressive sophomore resume. He showed plenty of promise and on thee verge of a gigantic junior season in 2023 where ehe should continue his impactful play.
J’shawn Towns – Brunswick
A heat-seeking missile at middle linebacker the South Georgia sophomore is a muscular linebacker who loves to get down-hill and deliver a big hit. A true instinctive linebacker who plays like a veteran, Towns is physical against the run and doesn’t mind coming down and making a tackle in the trenches and behind the line of scrimmage. He shows some quickness to his game but his physical nature and love for contact is easy to notice. He plays hard, can dissect plays before they happen, and has a knack for escaping blocks to find himself in the backfield, ready to make a big play. He plays hard, plays fast, and is coming off a very impressive sophomore season for one of the top programs in Southeast Georgia. Helping lead a strong Pirates defense that held six different opponents to 10 points or less, Towns made 88 total tackles, 7 TFLs, and two sacks last season as a starting sophomore linebacker. He’s a guy who gets off blocks, has a great motor, and knows how to leave a bruise when he meets the ball carrier. A true under thee radar linebacker in South Georgia, look for Towns to have a breakout junior season next fall for the Pirates.
