The 2022 football season has come and gone. Once again, the football season has just flown by. We’re a few weeks removed from the final football games of the 2022 season, and we’ve been recapping the year in football ever since. In today’s post, we’re taking a look at the best freshman of the year and some of the other top freshmen in the state. Broken Arrow running back KD Jones KD Jones 6'0" | 170 lbs | ATH Jenks | 2026 State OK is this year’s freshman of the year following an outstanding first year for the Tigers. We take a look at the impact he had on the field this season and also have the top five finishers in this year’s race for the award. Keep it locked into Prep Redzone Oklahoma every single day for more postseason content!
rnThe Tigers have a bright future behind Jones at running back. In fact, a few of their skill players on offense are younger so the offensive side of the ball will have some good experience coming back in 2023. Broken Arrow knew they had something special with running back KD Jones KD Jones 6’0″ | 170 lbs | ATH Jenks | 2026 State OK even though he was just a freshman. But the biggest question would be how would they use him because they also had a returning Nate Jones Nate Jones 5’9″ | RB Broken Arrow | 2023 State OK returning at the running back spot. The two would compliment each other well and both would go for over 1,000 yards this season.
rnBut it would be the freshman that would lead the team in carries, yards and rushing touchdowns this season. Jones would finish off the 2022 season with 172 carries for 1,264 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also put up some receiving numbers and he had a kick return for a touchdown this season. He was an instant impact player for the Tigers and we’re already looking ahead to seeing what he can be when he’s the marquee back in the Broken Arrow offense and not splitting carries.
rnBroken Arrow’s coaches knew they had a player in Jones that had the potential to be a breakout player immediately. He showed glimpses of brilliance back in the spring even though he was limited because he couldn’t officially join the team until school was out. It didn’t take him long to showcase his skills when the ball was in his hands. And throughout the season, Jones just kept getting better and better as the season went on. The more comfortable he got in the backfield, the more success he had. In Broken Arrow’s first seven games, Jones had 578 yards and five touchdowns. In their final five games, Jones had 686 yards and six touchdowns
rnJones performed well this season despite coming into the year with a lot of hype because of his last name and the DNA running through him. For those that don’t know, Jones is the son of former Jenks great and OU running back Kejuan Jones. And despite the hype, despite the expectations, Jones still had a breakout year and became arguably the top playmaker on the offensive side of the ball for Broken Arrow. The calendar literally just turned to 2023 but it’s never too early to start looking towards the 2023 season. We think Broken Arrow is primed for a big bounce back season behind Jones going into his sophomore season.
