With over 120 players entered for the event there was some solid prospects that improved their stock and performed well in front of NAIA coaches who instructed the showcase event. The showcase provided an opportunity for potential recruits to get some legitimate testing done to create a baseline for recruiting purposes and get some hands on instruction from camp position coaches. Here are my 4 prospects that raised their stock.
Kannon Bork Kannon Bork 6'2" | 215 lbs | TE Bishop Heelan Catholic | 2024 State IA 6-2 (210) Bishop Heelan Junior TE
Earned top TE laurels in competing with the WR group. Opened some eyes in one on one drills by running good routes and utilizing his broad upper body to shield defenders from impeding the catch. This is a kid who I have been following closely since last summer. Bork has soft hands and a big catch radius which makes him a nice target for any QB working the middle of the field and has good athleticism to carry a linebacker and defeat a safety in coverage further downfield. Bork was flexed out to form miss-matches this fall and has the athleticism to make explosive plays in man or zone coverage. Bork is also a willing in-line blocker in the run game. The Crusaders have a loaded class of 2024 kids and have a chance to push for the post season next fall and Bork most likely adding a bigger work load next fall will figure prominently in that becoming a reality.
Dayton Harrell Dayton Harrell 5'9" | 165 lbs | DB Sioux City North | 2024 State IA 5-9 (170) Sioux City North Junior CB/WR
A great prospect on either side of the ball. Harrell earned MVP for the group of cornerbacks here at the IA/NE Showcase Event coming off a (46.5) tackle season and (2) INT’s. Harrell displays a great ability to open his hips and run with the receivers and use his hands well off the line of scrimmage in press coverage to redirect the route. Harrell works hard to take away the inside receiver release and gain leverage defensively. Harrell is equally effective on the offensive side of the ball where he hauled in a team leading (29) receptions for (347) yards and (5) touchdowns. Harrell is my version of the swiss army knife as he can do so many things to impact a game on both sides of the football.
Caleb Garnand 6-0 (170) Lawton-Bronson Junior WR
Garnand is coming off a breakthrough junior season which saw him set a school record for catches in a season with (62) receptions for (714) yards and (7) touchdowns. Garnand performed well against the corners he went up against at the event by high pointing the football and showing good route running. Garnand will be looking to have an important focus this off-season to elevate his work in the weight room and is looking forward to spring track as he was part of a state championship sprint relay team as a sophomore. Solid prospect with a high ceiling and a key member of what should be a talented 2023 Eagle squad next fall.
Trae Piel 6-2 (175) Dakota Valley, SD Junior WR
Piel is a talented athletic junior that is a guy that pops of the game film when you watch it. Piel worked as a WR at the showcase and performed well in one on one drills versus the defensive secondary. Fluid athlete with good change of direction and impressive straight line speed. Precise route runner and drops hips well coming out of breaks. Intriguing prospect in 2024 class. Helped lead Panther team to South Dakota playoffs.
