The year ended in entertaining fashion with outstanding football being played in the state tournament in every class. With that being said, I would like to reflect on some of the top performers in each class during the playoffs. To kick things off, here are my top offensive players from the 2022 1A State Tournament.
Logan Lundy Logan Lundy 6’3″ | 215 lbs | QB Raceland | 2024 State KY is a player that I’ve kept an eye on all year as he played a huge part in an incredible season for Raceland. He continued to impress in the playoffs, leading them to a 1A State Championship birth. While they fell short of their final goal, losing to a very good Pikeville team, Lundy was able to showcase his ability as a passer, finishing the playoffs completing 44/67 passes for 1,300 yards, eleven touchdowns, and only two interceptions. He showed off an impressive arm with the ability to lead his receivers down the field in the deep passing game. Lundy also puts a nice amount of touch on his passes, putting the ball where only his receivers can get to it. He also showed some impressive mobility, running the ball 33 times for 226 yards and two touchdowns throughout the playoffs. Lundy will be looking to come back strong in his senior year and lead his team back to the State Championship.
Blake Birchfield Blake Birchfield 6’0″ | 180 lbs | RB Pikeville | 2023 State KY has been one of the most impressive players in the state this season and that didn’t change during Pikeville’s State Championship run in the playoffs. Birchfield ran the ball 82 times for an impressive 745 yards and 12 touchdowns throughout the playoffs. He has tremendous vision, allowing his blocks to set up then hitting the running lane in a hurry once it opens. Birchfield has the strength and contact balance to break tackles in the open field without breaking stride but also has the ability to make defenders miss and the speed to run away from the defense. He also showed some ability out of the backfield as a pass catcher, hauling in four pass for 73 yards and two touchdowns in the playoffs. His 236 yard, three touchdown performance in the 1A State Championship Game helped earned him MVP honors. Blake holds offers from Pikeville, Centre, Hanover, and Denison, and I can see him making a huge early impact for any of those programs at the next level.
Mason Lykins
Mason Lykins
Mason Lykins is a player that jumped out to me during the playoffs as he was Lundy’s go-to target during their run to the 1A State Championship Game. Lykins finished the playoffs with 15 receptions for 285 yards and five touchdowns. He is a dangerous deep threat on the outside with the speed to run right by defensive backs to create separation. Lykins is also electric after the catch, using his speed, elusiveness, and strength as a ball carrier to turn short passes and screens into big gains. He also threw a 50-yard touchdown pass in their semifinal victory over Louisville Holy Cross. Mason currently holds offers from UVA Wise and Bluffton, and I can see him developing into a very productive receiver at the next level.
Wade Hensley
Wade Hensley
Another senior wide receiver that stood out to me during the playoffs is Wade Hensley from Pikeville. Hensley played a key role in Pikeville’s State Championship run, catching seven passes for 135 yards and four touchdowns throughout the playoffs. Wade is very reliable in jump ball situations, showing the athleticism to go up and catch balls at their highest point along with the strong hands to bring in catches in traffic. He is also a dangerous deep threat, using his speed to create separation but also showing the concentration skills to look in passes over his shoulder. After the catch, Hensley has shown the ability to use his strength, speed, and elusiveness to turn short passes into big plays. Wade currently holds offers from Denison, Kentucky Christian, Pikeville, and Centre, and I can see him developing into a key player for any of those programs.
Troy Humphreys Troy Humphreys 6’1″ | 190 lbs | ATH Kentucky Country Day | 2024 State KY stood out to me during the regular season as one of the more impressive play makers in the state. While Kentucky Country Day only played in two playoff games, Humphreys was still able to showcase his talent in a big way. Humphreys finished the playoffs with nine catches for 240 yards and two touchdowns. He was used on a regular basis out of the slot on screen passes where he was able to use his speed after the catch to pick up big gains. Humphreys also showed strong hands and toughness when making catches through contact. In the deep passing game, Humphreys was able to use his speed to run right by opposing defensive backs. While he doesn’t currently hold any offers, I expect him to pick some up coming into his final season as he has the skill set to play at the next level and has already been receiving interest from college programs.
Highlights
Grant Scott Grant Scott 6’4″ | 235 lbs | TE Pikeville | 2023 State KY has been one of my top tight ends in the state throughout the season and that continued to be the case throughout the playoffs. Scott played a key role in helping Birchfield find success on the ground as he is an excellent blocker. He showed the ability to get to the second level and pick up blocks in the open field as a lead blocker. Once he got locked on to his defender, Scott showed great leg drive, driving his man down the field through the whistle. He also played a role in Pikeville’s passing game, finishing the playoffs with five catches for 60 yards and a touchdown. Grant currently holds offers from Pikeville, UVA Wise, and Hanover, and I can see him carving out a key role as a tight end for any of those programs.
Offensive Line: Entire Pikeville Unit
As you can see from Birchfield’s rushing numbers throughout the playoffs, Pikeville dominated up front on offense. For this reason, I decided not to focus on individual players for my offensive line slots as this entire Pikeville offensive line deserves some recognition. Their offensive line is led by the duo of brothers, Peyton Sayers Peyton Sayers 6'2" | 295 lbs | OL Pikeville | 2023 KY and Mason Sayers. They were joined on the offensive line by senior Rico Perez, junior Jackson Wilkerson Jackson Wilkerson 6'3" | 235 lbs | OL Pikeville | 2024 State KY , and senior Riley Thompson. This group is a physical unit that does a great job of creating movement off the line of scrimmage. They also work well together, picking up stunts in the passing game and making sure everyone picks up a defender down the field in the run game. Each one of these offensive linemen have the skill set to play at the next level if they choose to pursue that path after high school.
Honorable Mention:
Isaac Duty Isaac Duty 6'5" | 215 lbs | QB Pikeville | 2025 State KY (2025 Quarterback, Pikeville); Ethan Harris Ethan Harris 6'1" | 150 lbs | QB Kentucky Country Day | 2024 State KY (2024 Quarterback, Kentucky Country Day); Harris Phelps Harris Phelps 5'11" | 180 lbs | RB Paintsville | 2023 State KY (2023 Running Back, Paintsville); Max Johnson Max Johnson 6'0" | 170 lbs | ATH Hazard | 2023 State KY (2023 ATH, Hazard)
