Typically, the biggest schools produce the best QBs and the most pass-heavy offenses, which is the case with Michigan’s D1, D2, and D3. The finalists of all three of these divisions have electric QBs that have played in big situations all season. Here’s a breakdown of all of the potential starting QBs in the state finals!
Mason Mckenzie Mason Mckenzie 6'0" | 170 lbs | QB Caledonia | 2023 State MI | Caledonia (D1)
Game Management, Work Rate, and Decision-Making are Mason’s biggest strengths. Don’t get me wrong, Mason can sling it, and he’s worked tirelessly to get his arm to a great level, but first and foremost, Mason is a dual-threat game manager. Cal runs the QB option quite a bit, and Mason has some inane highlights with him pulling and running with it. During the postseason, Mason has seldom turned the ball over, and doesn’t take too many risks throwing the football. When he does decide to throw it downfield, he does so with confidence and good accuracy. There are some highlights where his deep ball is pinpoint, and those highlights are when he has time with his feet set. Other throws are quick and off the first read, being usually pretty accurate, but sometimes slightly off the mark, but still catchable. I expect Belleville to force Mason to throw the ball a bit more, and I’m interested in seeing how he performs against an elite secondary and the most athletic team Cal has faced.
Bryce Underwood Bryce Underwood 6'3" | 205 lbs | QB Belleville | 2025 State MI | Belleville (D1)
There’s good reason why Underwood is one of the most touted QBs in the country. He has a rare mix of physical gifts with an amazing work ethic with an elite coaching staff to guide him. He’s a well-rounded star with the ability to throw the deep ball with touch, fully read a defense, go through his progressions quickly, and he’s very comfortable in the pocket. He looks like a Power 5 QB already, and there hasn’t been a game he hasn’t looked extremely impressive. I haven’t watched Underwood in person since the 2021 State Championship, so I’m extremely excited to see what he can do this weekend.
Brady Drogosh Brady Drogosh 6'5" | 205 lbs | QB De La Salle | 2023 State MI | De La Salle (D2)
During last season’s state championships, Brady Drogosh Brady Drogosh 6'5" | 205 lbs | QB De La Salle | 2023 State MI stunned the media in the press booth. In fact, his championship performance propelled his recruitment to the point where he was getting multiple Power 5 offers, which led him to commit to Cincinnati. Brady has a superb understanding of the game and is fundamentally one of the best pro-style QBs in Michigan. The De La Salle offensive scheme is more complicated than most High School systems, and Drogosh runs it extremely well. The only thing holding Drogosh back is the lack of any insane physical traits. This is a QB that works his tail off and won’t turn the ball over.
Justin Osterhouse | Forest Hills Central (D2)
Osterhouse is a common stud QB whose main sport is Baseball. He’s a game manager who runs the FHC offense incredibly well. I watched him last season against Grand Blanc, where he came in relief, and he played incredibly well in a shootout. He’s a pro-style QB with good pocket presence, good accuracy, and poise. Unfortunately, Osterhouse suffered an ankle injury in the district championship, and he is questionable for this weekend.
Mason McDonald | Forest Hills Central (D2)
McDonald has been the starter since the regional final against East Lansing, and he’s led the Rangers to victory against a few of the best teams in the state. Unfortunately, there isn’t much film on McDonald because he’s been the backup all season. Against East Lansing, he had an ok game passing with one touchdown, one interception, and a whole lot of runs. Against Dexter, there wasn’t much passing on either side since that game was played in a blizzard. So, McDonald is a bit of a mystery at QB. If he does start for the Rangers, expect less passing and more runs.
Dante Moore Dante Moore 6'2" | 210 lbs | QB Detroit King | 2023 State MI | King (D3)
If you know any QB in Michigan, it’s Dante Moore Dante Moore 6'2" | 210 lbs | QB Detroit King | 2023 State MI . In a nutshell, he’s one of the most elite and highly-touted players in the country. Every QB trait is very good – elite, and he’ll lead the D3 favorite.
M’khi Guy M’khi Guy 5'7" | 165 lbs | ATH Muskegon | 2024 State MI | Muskegon (D3)
It’s difficult to fully grade Guy since there isn’t a whole lot of film on him, but I know the type of player he is. At 5’9 155lbs, Guy is a dual threat with Lamar Jackson type abilities. In a blizzard last weekend, Guy totaled over 300 yards rushing against a powerhouse DeWitt program. In addition, Muskegon has an elite offensive line, which allows Guy to go whatever he wants at QB. I can’t attest to his arm talent, but I imagine it’s good, not great. The main intrigue with Guy is his athleticism, and I can’t wait to see him play against King.
