A league matchup featuring a 6-1 team facing off against a 5-2 team with similar resumes, but West Catholic found a way to not only win but dominate.
Note: I only attended the first half. With a crushing migraine and being a college student with midterms next week, I decided it was best to call it a night. As a result, I, unfortunately, wasn’t able to fully evaluate everyone that I wanted to.
General Notes/Standouts
From the jump, Coopersville didn’t look like a bad team, and they’re not. Early on in the game, they stood their ground well, but lost their confidence after a few misfires, dropped passes, and turnovers. QB Colton Bosch didn’t have a good stat line, but he didn’t play horribly. He did have a few bad passes that were intercepted, but he also had many throws that the receiver should have come down with. But overall, I didn’t see many standouts from Coopersville.
West Catholic came out as a different team than what I saw last season. I’m very impressed by how Landon Grove has run the program thus far. Pregame was organized and physical, with a unique move of cutting the all-stadium hype music for heavy rock music only on the West Catholic sideline. This made the West Catholic side hype and the Coopersville side quiet. A move that I’ve never seen done before.
In terms of the scheme, I was very impressed by the West Catholic secondary. Windows were much tighter than I normally see, and Danny Groszkiewicz had a 100-yard pick-6. I’d say the entire West Catholic secondary played well. I also heard Elliot Zainea Elliot Zainea LB West Catholic | 2023 MI ‘s name a lot, and it comes to no surprise as I know he’s put in excellent effort this past offseason. Offensively, Coopersville did a good job at time of possession, but when West Catholic had the ball, they ran a balanced show. Bernie Varnesdeel played well. Timmy Kloska Timmy Kloska 6'0" | 220 lbs | RB Grand Rapids West Catholic | 2023 State MI was as I expected, but I suspect he may have been on a limited snap count (if anything, a minor injury). All in all, this is a rarely balanced D6 team and the State Championship favorite.
