Coming into this game, most expected the Chatfield Chargers to quickly run away with this game against the Lakewood Tigers and those expectations were certainly validated as this game was fairly one-sided from start to finish. Even as the Tigers trailed only 14-6 at the half, the dam was going to break at any moment and that’s exactly what happened in the 2nd half, with the Chargers scoring early and coasting from there to solidify the 35-6 beatdown. Despite how lopsided this game was, there were many great performance from players on both sides. With that being said, here are the three players who I felt had the best game last Friday.
Players of the Game
Brock Narva Brock Narva 5'11" | 180 lbs | ATH Chatfield | 2025 State CO , Chatfield Chargers (RB)(So.)(20) – Narva was, unquestionably, the most impressive player amongst his peers who were also impressive, which is saying something about his night. Much like many teams through eight weeks this season, the Tigers defense had no answer for Narva, as he accounted for a remarkable 133 yards rushing and a rushing touchdown on 15 carries (8.9 YPC) while also accounting for 94 yards receiving and a receiving touchdown on 4 receptions (23.5 YPR). When you put on the tape of Narva’s night against the Lakewood defense, you can see that Narva displays exceptional balance and power at the point-of-attack when making contact against a defender despite his small, but stocky, stature (5’10, 180 lbs) thanks to his very strong core and lower body. While being a shorter back, this actually works in his favor against many second and third level defenders in addition to working inside carries on runs between the tackles, easily breaking through arm tackles because of his low center of gravity. Explosive, one-cut runner that quickly looks to find daylight if given enough space. Enough top end foot speed to pull away from slower 2nd and 3rd level defenders if a bad angle is taken. Versatile athlete on offense that displays excellent ability as a receiver, whether working out of the backfield or lined up in the slot. Definition of a workhorse tailback that is at his best in the 2nd half when the defense has been worn down over the course of a game. Narva is currently rated the number 1 athlete and the number 8 player overall for the class of 2025. If his game against the Tigers is any indication, that ranking is well deserved and he’ll be a fun player to watch the next couple of years.
Vince Martinez, Lakewood Tigers (RB)(Sr.)(22) – While there weren’t many bright spots this game for the Tigers, Martinez was certainly one of them. Offensively, there really wasn’t a player who had a better night, with the box score supporting that. Glancing at Martinez’s numbers against the Chargers defense, he accounted for 93 yards rushing and a rushing touchdown, which would be Lakewood’s lone score on the night, on 23 carries (4.0 YPC). Diving into the film of Martinez’s performance against the Chatfield defense, you can see he displays a balanced running style that displays both his power and speed in any down and distance. Prototypical workhorse tailback that wears down the defense over the course of the game, doing most of his damage in the 4th quarter. Great power and balance at the point-of-attack when making contact with the defender make him a difficult ball carrier to bring down in 1-on-1 situations. Deceptive top end foot speed allows him to pull away from slower 2nd and 3rd level defenders if a bad angle is taken. Shows good vision and the ability to bounce the ball outside, but is at his best on inside carries in between the tackles where he can maximize his strengths as a ball carrier. Martinez isn’t currently ranked on any recruiting boards, but he is certainly a talented player that will look to get a win before his senior season is over.
Avery Deweese, Chatfield Chargers (LB)(Jr.)(47) – Deweese was one of the key contributors on the defensive side of the ball for the Chargers and their complete domination of the Lakewood offense. Looking at Deweese’s numbers from his night against the Tigers, he accounted for an impressive 6 tackles, 2 tackles for a loss, a pass deflection, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. Turning to the tape of Deweese’s performance against the Lakewood offense, he immediately stands out as an extremely high motor player that relentlessly pursues the ball carrier. Smart, disciplined LB that understands his responsibilities, run fits, and while playing aggressive doesn’t get caught over-pursuing the ball carrier, consistently maintaining the edge well. Shows consistently sound form at the point-of-attack when making contact with the ball carrier, getting his head across the core, wrapping up, and driving his legs through contact. Shows good first step explosiveness when coming out of his stance and crashing downhill towards the line of scrimmage. Shows a good ability to stack-and-shed the opposing blocker when working towards the ball carrier. Deweese isn’t currently ranked on any recruiting boards, but he’ll certainly be an important piece of the Chatfield defense through this year and next.
