Big North
Portland defeats Cadillac 32-6 | A great win for Portland over a very good Cadillac team. I thought this game would have been much closer. Moving forward, Portland is a championship contender in division 5, while Cadillac could make a great run in Division 3.
Gladstone defeats Gaylord 22-14 | Gaylord now needs to defeat 5-3 Clare to make the postseason. Gladstone is suddenly a D4 championship contender and surely the best team in the UP.
Capital-Area
Holt defeats East Lansing 16-13 | These are two very interesting teams in a very interesting Capital-Area Blue. Holt has a great resume defeating both East Lansing and Grand Ledge, but they also got stomped by DeWitt and Mason. East Lansing drops only their second game of the season and has a great resume having beaten Portage Northern, Fenton, and DeWitt. Next week against Grand Ledge will be one of the games of the week.
Catholic League
Divine Child defeats Notre Dame Prep 35-14 | Look out for Divine Child in Division 4. This is a 6-2 team with a good resume. ND Prep falls to 5-3 but is still a very good program in Division 5. Best of luck to both of these teams in the postseason.
Brother Rice defeats Country Day 28-6 | Look out for Rice this postseason. We have a good idea of who Rice might be paired with in the postseason, and it’s very favorable for them. Country Day is now 5-2 with one of the best RBs in the state, and they could make tons of noise in the D5 playoffs.
De La Salle defeats River Rouge 19-18 | What a game this was! Rouge held the lead for most of the game, but De La Salle simply found a way to win. These are two state championship contenders, nay, state championship favorites.
Catholic Central defeats Cincinnati La Salle 31-21 | An excellent win for Catholic Central against an Ohio program that usually goes far in their playoffs. This further establishes that Catholic Central is a team that can beat just about anyone.
PSL Blue Final
Cass Tech defeats Detroit MLK 28-14 | With Oregon Head Coach Dan Lanning in attendance, Cass Tech secures a playoff spot with impressive performances from young talent. Although Cass Tech wins the city championship, both of these teams are yet to face their biggest game of the season, as it’s championship or bust for both schools.
Flint Metro
Corunna defeats Swartz Creek 28-27 | A extremely competitive match between two playoff teams.
Huron League
Flat Rock defeats New Boston Huron 29-28 | Flat Rock is a safe playoff team in Division 5, and New Boston now needs a week 9 win against 6-2 Crestwood to make the postseason. This was a huge game in terms of playoff standings.
KLAA
Belleville defeats Livonia Franklin 42-14 | I’m impressed by how long Franklin hung around, but Belleville is Belleville. I have Belleville as my D1 Favorite to win the State Championship, while Livonia Franklin is a sure-fire championship contender in D2.
Dearborn defeats Fordson 35-13 | I don’t know when the last time Dearborn defeated Fordson two years in a row, but it’s been a while. Fordson will miss the postseason, while Dearborn is a safe D1 playoff team.
Brighton defeats Howell 21-6 | Brighton continues their dominance and is set to face Belleville next week.
Stevenson defeats Churchill 21-20 | A rivalry win for Stevenson that makes them the #32 team in D1. Churchill will not make the postseason.
Northville defeats Novi 21-10 | Northville continues to roll while Novi is still a playoff team in D1.
Lakes Valley
Mott defeats South Lyon 43-42 | Waterford Mott wins a nail-biter. I really hope this team does well this postseason because I don’t think they’ll be nearly as successful next season. South Lyon is a great playoff team that has been heating up lately.
South Lyon East defeats Milford 10-0 | SLE has been one of the season’s biggest surprises. Milford is a solid program but still fighting to make the postseason, and they may have to win against Lakeland to get there.
MAC
Romeo defeats Grosse Pointe South 35-20 | These are two safe playoff teams and a great measuring stick game for GPS.
Roseville defeats Anchor Bay 21-3 | Now the #8 ranked team in Division 2, Roseville is looking strong. Anchor Bay is one spot outside the playoffs and will need to win their week 9 matchup in order to get in.
Lakeview defeats Lakeshore 48-22 | Lake Shore is hanging on for dear life in the playoffs, as they’re now #30 in D3. Lakeview may have just clinched a spot, but barely. With this win, they are now the #27 team in D2.
Eisenhower defeats Utica 20-7 | Rivalry game with the expected outcome, but this is still significant for Eisenhower’s playoff seeding.
OAA
Farmington defeats Seaholm 39-21 | Honestly, one of the biggest surprises of the week. I did not expect Farmington to defeat Seaholm for the OAA Blue title. What a gameplan for the Falcons. This makes me more confident in Farmington and less confident in Seaholm heading into the postseason. Seaholm has a massive game this Friday against rival Groves.
Clarkston defeats Lapeer 48-13 | I fully expected Clarkston to win against Lapeer, but the margin was a bit more than I expected. What this outcome tells me is that Clarkston is a very complete team.
Stoney Creek defeats Rochester 43-22 | Stoney Creek pulled away in the second half to defeat one of their rivals. This squeaks Stoney into the playoffs for the time being, as they are now ranked 31 in D1. Rochester on the other hand suffers a major blow to their playoff odds, now as the #34 team in D1. Both teams may need to win in Week 9.
West Bloomfield defeats A&T 42-21 | This is a statement win for West Bloomfield and an uncharacteristic performance for A&T, even against a powerhouse. Regardless of this outcome, these are two teams expecting state championship.
OK
East Kentwood defeats Hudsonville 29-20 | As I said in my biggest games report, this secures a playoff sport for EK, and knocks Hudsonville out.
West Catholic defeats Coopersville 37-0 | Dominant, balanced win for West Catholic over a good Coopersville squad.
Spring Lake defeats Unity Christian 35-32 | By far the biggest shock of the week. It doesn’t do much for the playoffs though, as UC is still safe, and Spring Lake won’t make the postseason.
EGR defeats Lowell 15-14 | EGR has had an excellent end to the season, and they’re suddenly gearing up for the playoffs!
Mona Shores defeats Reeths-Puffer 15-0 | Expected win for Mona Shores, but still extremely impressive for the Rp defense to only give up 15 points.
Zeeland East defeats GR Union 25-21 | This came as a surprise. Unfortunately, this knocks Union out of the postseason unless they can pull off the impossible and beat Zeeland West.
Southeastern
Dexter defeats Saline 21-14 | The Game of the Week for most. I expected Dexter to win, and they did just that. It’s going to be extremely interesting to see what both of these teams can do this postseason. I still feel like I don’t know how good Saline is.
