Team Preview

Monsignor Farrell looks to build off of an excellent season last year and put up a fight against Iona Prep for the top of the NYCHFL AAA division. Farrell returns one of the best players in the league last season in Buffalo commit, [player_tooltip player_id='233590' first='Messiah' last='Burch']. Last season Burch was dominant while splitting time with three other backs. All three backs are graduating, meaning Burch is left to take a workhorse-type load headed into his senior season. Alongside Burch in the backfield is Junior quarterback Cristian Pinto who I fully expect to take the next step this season and become one of the most dominant passers in New York State. Pinto had solid production last season. Although he loses some of his top receivers, I think the connection between him and Senior [player_tooltip player_id='371649' first='Justin' last='Guzman'] will be huge for Monsignor Farrell this season.

While the defense was the driving force of the Monsignor Farrell squad last year, allowing the least amount of points in the Catholic AAA league, they lose several vital guys from last year's stifling unit. The key to keeping that defensive unit strong will be strong jumps from both Yasire Dejesus and Louis Martinez. Returning starters John Caufield and Nick Rossini will be asked to step up not only as leaders but as playmakers on the defensive side of the ball.

Monsignor Farrell may have been a defense-first team last season, but I fully expect the offense to take the necessary steps to put up some serious points this fall. Last season they only scored over 30 points four times, all four resulting in wins. If the Pinto can take that next step and Burch continues to dominate with potentially even more carries this Monsignor Farrell squad, they could be a genuine threat to Iona Prep and the top of the League. Monsignor Farrell will be one of the most intriguing teams to watch this fall.

2022 Schedule

9/3 vs. Bishop Hendrickson (RI)

9/10 @ Archbishop Stepinac

The opening league game for Monsignor Farrell is away at Archbishop Stepinac is no easy task. Last year [player_tooltip player_id='233590' first='Messiah' last='Burch'] dominated this game with almost 200 yards rushing. To start the league play on the right foot, Monsignor Farrell Will need Burch to replicate that performance.

10/17 vs. Hudson Catholic (NJ)

10/23 vs. St. Anthony's

10/1 vs. St. Peter's

10/8 @ Moore Catholic

10/15 @ St. Joseph by-the-Sea

10/21 vs. Iona Prep

Monsignor Farrell's only losses last season were to Iona Prep and Chaminade. This year Chaminade is not on the schedule, so Iona Prep will be their only chance to avenge any losses. They will have their hands full with New York States' #1 Team. Star back [player_tooltip player_id='233590' first='Messiah' last='Burch'] will need to perform well, and the defense will need to slow down the potent Iona Prep offense to keep this one close.
