Ben Chilson
Here’s a new quarterback name. Ben Chilson, a standout player on the court, had a stellar first game of the season against Wyoming Area. Sharp, decisive, Chilson stood tall in the pocket and picked apart a Chilson defense at all three levels of the field. Accurate on the run, Chilson hit multiple targets in the red zone while avoiding pressure. Solid start to the year with a 215-yard, 3 TD performance.
Giovanni Cavanna
Giovanni Cavanna
Octorara Area had its hands full with Giovanni Cavanna this past weekend. No matter the kids that came in pursuit, Cavanna just wouldn’t go down. The Muhlenberg offense instills a ton of misdirection sets that often caught Octorara off guard. Cavanna took advantage. The runs Cavanna broke were hardly a result of scheme however, the young man broke for most of his yardage thanks to his awesome balance and power. Seven carries, 220 yards, and three scores. Add another 70-yard catch as well.
Artis Simmons
Artis Simmons
Just under 300 rushing yards on the night for new name Artis Simmons. Throw in another 50 yards threw the air and three total scores. What a night for the unassuming McDowell senior. The first tape put out by Simmons showed a little of everything. On outside zone runs, Simmons showed he has the acceleration and straight-line speed to break long runs for scores. He showed he has the vision and patience to run inside the tackles. He also showed he can be a player in the passing attack, catching balls both out of the backfield and in shotgun sets as a wideout. Defenses will have their hands full with this weapon.
Luke Cignetti
Luke Cignetti
Another back who just barely missed the 300-yard mark on the ground. What’s interesting, all three scores of Cignetti’s came from inside the red zone, which is unusual for a back that goes for almost 300 yards on the ground. Love his running style, it’s a quick burst, combined with one-cut, then north and south. Cignetti is straight to the point, he’d rather hit the hole hard than second guess himself. Hard to understand how we don’t have this kid ranked. He also had some great reps from his safety spot last week.
Timmy Bonin
Timmy Bonin
Here’s the second quarterback on the list. Timmy Bonin, who is currently committed to Merrimack Baseball, put on a show opening night against Red Land HS. Bonin was an efficient 16/23, throwing for 250 yards and three scores. He chipped in a rushing touchdown for good measure. The rushing touchdown wasn’t flukey, this kid is a threat with his legs, either taking off for yardage or moving his launch point to throw the ball. A lot of what Northern York calls has Bonin under center, so there’s clear attention to detail when dropping back to pass. Fun tape to watch, hope he continues on this path.
