It’s the month of July and that means it’s preview time! Throughout the month of July, we are publishing 100 team previews to get you ready for the 2022 season. This is something that began last year and has become even bigger and better this year. We’re looking forward to diving deep into the top teams across the state. From defending champs, to top contenders and dark horses, we’ll have complete coverage every single day with new teams from Class 6A down to A. In this post, we take a look at the Mustang Broncos. Mustang would advance to the semifinals last year and they want to build off that this season.
Mustang Broncos (6A-1 Preseason Ranking: #5)
After a true roller coaster season in which Mustang would go 6-4 in the regular season but push eventual champion Jenks in the semifinals, the Broncos are once again in the mix in 6A-1 as they enter this season. Last year was a year that could have gone several different ways for the Broncos. They had six games decided by six points or less and several games where their opponent would score the go-ahead touchdown with less than a minute to play. Despite that, there are many things to look back on the 2021 season and use as momentum as they go into this year. With the majority of their starters back, the Broncos expect to be contenders once again in 6A-1 and push the elite in the class and try to finally capture that elusive state championship.
The Broncos come into this season as the #5 team in the 6A-1 rankings. With six starters back on offense, including almost every skill position, and another six starters back on defense, it’s easy to see why Mustang expects to be contending for a state championship this fall. However, with the addition of Bixby to 6A-1, this class just got much more difficult and the districts have been shuffled and have become deeper as well. Mustang could win the district championship or they could finish fourth or even out of the playoffs. We saw that the difference between those two things is not that much last season and the Broncos will attempt to keep destiny in their hands and not leave it up to anyone else this fall.

While Mustang’s strength might be their offense, they also have plenty of talent on the defensive side of the ball. And you can start the conversation with 2023 linebacker

. We like his game and his recruitment has started to take off over the last few months and there’s no surprise there after watching his tape over the last two years. Conrad has the chance to be another linebacker prospect that blows up in a big way during his senior year. The linebacker position in the state’s 2023 class just continues to get deeper and deeper. Conrad definitely belongs in the top ten of linebackers and will have more opportunities to play college ball this fall.

has been considered one of the best prospects in the state’s 2023 class. He’s held on to the top spot in the defensive back position group since we began ranking the 2023 class. Johnson is an absolute lockdown corner and not to mention he’s also a standout basketball player. In fact, our basketball site Prep Hoops Oklahoma also released ranking updates for the 2023 class and Johnson was in the top ten there as well. In addition to the defense, Johnson will provide the Mustang offense with a spark and big play ability at the receiver position.

had his junior season cut short due to an injury but he’s back to 100 percent and is a big reason why we like Mustang this season with some of the talent they have coming back on offense. Just like Johnson, Bass is also one of the better 2023 prospects in basketball but just like with Johnson, he’s more of a football prospect because the ceiling is higher on the gridiron. Bass was one of the top prospects we watched during the offseason while playing 7v7. We believe that Bass is primed to be one of the top wide receivers in 6A-1 this season and he’ll show the state what we’ve been watching for the last six months.

. This Mustang signal caller enjoyed a breakout season and he was really fun to watch throughout the year. There’s no doubt that Russell had some serious weapons around him but he still had to make the throws and make the plays to put Mustang in a good position. Russell is a smaller quarterback prospect but if you’ve watched him in person, you don’t get too concerned with his size. He’s an absolute gamer and one of the tougher quarterbacks we watched last season. He should have an even bigger and better 2022 season.

2022 Schedule/Games To Circle
Sept. 2 – AT Southmoore
Sept. 9 – Deer Creek
Sept. 16 – Springdale Har-Ber, AR.
Sept. 23 – AT Yukon
– Well this week four match-up will almost feel normal as Mustang travels to face rival Yukon. Normally, these two open up the football season against one another. This year, they’ll be opening up district play against each other after the redistricting has shuffled 6A-1 and Mustang and Yukon are now district foes. The Broncos have owned this rivalry for years and they’re looking to continue that with added stakes of district play being added this fall. This also begins a four week stretch that could make or break Mustang’s season as the following three weeks are against three top ten teams that all have district title aspirations.
Sept. 30 – Owasso
– After facing rival Yukon, the Broncos will return home and host an Owasso team that will be absolutely hungry to get after the Broncos. Owasso will be coming off a week four clash with Union so this will either be a must win for the Rams or a game that can further their chances of the district title. Throw in the fact that Mustang came to Owasso last year and stunned the Rams in a shootout and you have the makings for a big week five clash. The Broncos had a lot of success against Owasso last season offensively and they’ll look to have another big game here. If they can knock off the Rams again, they’ll be in a good spot within the district.
Oct. 6 – AT Edmond Santa Fe
– One week after hosting the Rams and before they host a Union team that is #1 in the preseason rankings, they’ll travel to Edmond to take on Santa Fe. This game will be massive in terms of district seeding. The winner will keep district title hopes alive and the loser will run the risk of being in fourth within the district or even miss out on the playoffs all together. Just like Owasso the week before, Santa Fe will be ready for this match-up with the Broncos and they’ll have a little revenge on their mind. Mustang would end Edmond Santa Fe’s season last year in the quarterfinals and that was a game that wasn’t very close.
Oct. 13 – Union
Oct. 20 – AT Norman
Oct. 28 – Edmond North
Nov. 4 – AT Edmond Memorial
Notable
Mustang’s 2021 season was definitely a roller coaster ride as the Broncos began the season 1-2 and then 3-3. But they would then rattle off three straight wins, including the road win over Owasso that put them in a position to host a home playoff game. But then in week ten, the Broncos would fall to Moore, who ended up missing the playoffs all together. And they followed that up by handling Edmond Santa Fe and pushing eventual champion Jenks in the semifinals. We could never really figure that Mustang team out as they were one of the more unpredictable teams in the state. As they head into this season, they’re experienced and ready to win the big games again and remove some of the blunders they had last year.
