It’s the month of July and that means it’s preview time! Throughout the month of July, we are publishing 100 team previews to get you ready for the 2022 season. This is something that began last year and has become even bigger and better this year. We’re looking forward to diving deep into the top teams across the state. From defending champs, to top contenders and dark horses, we’ll have complete coverage every single day with new teams from Class 6A down to A. In this post, we take a look at the Millwood Falcons. The perennial powerhouse in Oklahoma City is ready to dominate Class 2A once again.
Millwood Falcons (2A Preseason Ranking: #4)
The last two seasons haven’t been the easiest for the Millwood football program. First, they had the 2020 season which was drastically impacted by Covid. They had three regular season games cancelled and then didn’t play their first playoff game until November 27th after the regular season ended on November 6th. Then Millwood would have a losing season and miss the playoffs for the first time in over a decade in 2021. So the Falcons are ready to erase the memories of the last two seasons and turn the page to the 2022 season. Despite the struggles in the last two years, we think that the Falcons are primed to not only return in a big way this season, but they’re one of the top teams in Class 2A as they come in at #4 in the 2A preseason rankings.
A big reason behind the struggles of 2021 was their incredibly young roster. Well, that inexperience and young talent now features veterans as Millwood brings back 15 starters from last year’s team. Eight starters return on offense, including the return of a dynamic running back that missed the majority of last season. Then you look at their defense and they bring back seven starters from last year’s team. The Falcons put in a new defense last season and they definitely had some growing pains. Now, the Falcons understand the system and are ready to make another championship run. Class 2A is just as talented and deep as it has been over the last few years and Millwood returning as a contender just makes it deeper.

. The Millwood lineman finished his junior season with ten sacks and also had 18 tackles for loss. Strong wasn’t just a threat when it came to getting after the quarterback or stopping the run. He actually helped in the pass game as well. He eight passes, which was one of the higher numbers on the team and it came from the defensive line. The Falcons have speed every where but Strong is one of the bigger prospects that you need to know.

has joined the Millwood football team this offseason and before he’s even played in a real game, he’s already received multiple D1 offers. Nickens is a basketball standout and in fact, he’s the #1 overall prospect in the state’s 2025 class. But Nickens has big aspirations for himself and his high school career. In addition to being one of the top basketball prospects in the state, he wants to be one of the top football prospects in the state at the same time.

first got our attention during and following his freshman season. It was apparent then that the Falcons had yet another special prospect in Lavine. However, Lavine wasn’t able to play the majority of his sophomore season due to an injury so because of that, his recruitment has been somewhat limited. However, now that he’s back to full strength, he should be a very important part of the Millwood offense and more schools should see what we’ve seen since he was a freshman and that is a special talent at the running back position.

2022 Schedule/Games To Circle
Sept. 1 – Heritage Hall
– These two Oklahoma City powerhouses renewed their rivalry in 2018 and have been opening the season against one another ever since. In that 2018 meeting, the Falcons knocked off the Chargers with a 30-20 victory. Ever since then, it’s been all Heritage Hall as the Chargers have won the last three meetings and have looked rather dominant during that streak. However, Millwood has reloaded and are not only ready to be competitive in Class 2A but they’re ready to compete with the Chargers and push the 3A powerhouse in the opener. The Falcons can get a lot of momentum from a week one win here.
Sept. 10 – AT Douglass
Sept. 16 – Scott Community, KS.
Sept. 23 – Alva
Sept. 30 – AT Chisholm
Oct. 7 – AT Perry
Oct. 13 – Newkirk
Oct. 21 – AT Oklahoma Christian
– After the redistricting shuffle, Millwood’s district schedule is much easier to navigate compared to the gauntlet that they had to run last season. In fact, the entire district slate is full of new opponents so while it’s not as much of a gauntlet, it’ll bring new challenges to the Falcons. Perhaps the toughest district clash won’t take place until week eight when the Falcons travel a few miles north to Edmond where they’ll take on Oklahoma Christian. The Saints have been one of the better 2A teams over the last few years. It’ll be a clash of styles as Millwood is certainly a run-first team while OCS has one of the better 2024 quarterbacks in the state.
Oct. 28 – AT Hennessey
Nov. 4 – Blackwell
Notable
Millwood’s inexperienced and young roster cost them a playoff spot in 2021. That ended a streak of 13 consecutive seasons where the Falcons made it to the postseason. This is a Millwood program that has routinely been one of the top teams in Class 2A over the last decade but last season was truly a rebuilding year. Now as they head into the new season with just about everyone returning, there is reason to be very optimistic that not only will the Falcons return to the playoffs this fall, but they’ll be competing for a state championship. Millwood captured back to back championships in 2016 and 2017 and they might be primed to win another gold ball with their mix of veteran leadership and excellent young talent.
