It’s the month of July and that means it’s preview time! Throughout the month of July, we are publishing 100 team previews to get you ready for the 2022 season. This is something that began last year and has become even bigger and better this year. We’re looking forward to diving deep into the top teams across the state. From defending champs, to top contenders and dark horses, we’ll have complete coverage every single day with new teams from Class 6A down to A. In this post, we take a look at the Lawton Wolverines. After back to back losing seasons, the Wolverines are determined to make it back to the playoffs this fall.
Lawton Wolverines (6A-2 Preseason Ranking: #7)
The Lawton Wolverines come into this season as the #7 team in our 6A-2 preseason rankings and they’re ready to not only make it back to the playoffs after a rare miss last season, but they’re wanting to do much more. The Wolverines had some high expectations going into last year, as they do in most seasons. But injuries would hurt the Wolverines early on and they could never get any momentum and would suffer a 4-6 record and miss out on the postseason all together. Fast forward to this fall and the Wolverines bring back the majority of their starters, the district looks much different then it did a year ago and if they get off to a good start and avoid the injury bug, the Wolverines should make it back to the playoffs and who knows from there. We saw some wild results in the 6A-2 playoffs a season ago.
Seven starters return on the offensive side of the ball and as we mentioned, if this group can stay healthy, they have the chance to be pretty special and score a lot of points this fall. We got a chance to see them in action this spring at a team camp in Noble and they were very explosive and it seemed like every time we looked over they were scoring another touchdown. The Wolverines have a great grasp on their offense and should be one of the top teams in this district when it comes to the offensive side of the ball. While the offense has the chance to be special, the defense should be improved as well. They bring back seven starters on defense and we’re interested to see how they respond this season. Last year, they gave up a lot of points in a lot of games and if they can improve on that, it should be a good year for the Wolverines.

is a quarterback we’ve seen a few times in person over the last year. At first glance, you assume that he’s going to be one of the better athletes on the field but he can throw the ball incredibly well. He’s very accurate with his passes and it definitely helps that he has some serious talent around him. Hardy will benefit from the talent around him but also his experience. We said this Lawton offense is very comfortable together and it starts with Hardy. He has a great understanding of what the Wolverines are trying to do and will be a big reason why they’re one of the top offenses in 6A-2 this fall.

is arguably Lawton’s best athlete and has been for the last two years but he missed half of the season last year due to an injury and the Wolverines missed him. Now he’s back and looks just as explosive as ever. The Lawton coaches expect Amacker to not only be a playmaker for them, but they expect him to be one of the top playmakers in the class. They believe that by the end of the season, Amacker’s recruitment will skyrocket.

2022 Schedule/Games To Circle
Sept. 1 – Duncan
Sept. 9 – Lawton MacArthur
– If the Wolverines are going to be competitors once again in 6A-2 this fall, they need to start getting momentum going into district play and they need to turn things around in their own town against rivals MacArthur and Eisenhower. They lost to their two city rivals by a combined 56 points a season ago and they’re determined to not let that happen again. It starts in week two when they square off with MacArthur, followed by Eisenhower in week three. If Lawton High is truly the top team in the city and can truly contend in 6A-2, they’ll need to take care of business against the Highlanders and capture the city title before they worry about the district.
Sept. 16 – AT Lawton Eisenhower
Sept. 23 – Putnam City
Sept. 30 – AT Ponca City
Oct. 7 – AT Northwest Classen
Oct. 14 – Deer Creek
Oct. 21 – AT Choctaw
– By the time week eight rolls around, we’ll have a fairly good idea how good this Lawton team is and where they stand within the district and in Class 6A-2 as a whole. They’ll hit the road to take on Choctaw in this week eight clash after hosting the reigning 6A-2 runner up in Deer Creek the week before. This two-week stretch will either help or hurt Lawton’s chances of contending in the district and their playoff seeding overall. Choctaw is the top team in this district coming into the season and they expect to contend for the 6A-2 title this fall. This will be the ultimate measuring stick game for the Wolverines late in the season.
Oct. 28 – AT Putnam City North
Nov. 3 – Capitol Hill
Notable
The last four years haven’t gone exactly as smooth for the Wolverines as the first few years since Class 6A split into two divisions. Lawton was the dominant westside team when the class first split into two divisions back in 2014. The Wolverines made it to the 2014 and 2016 state championship games and made several semifinal appearances during that stretch as well. But over the last few years, they’ve taken a step back while teams like Stillwater, Del City and last year with Deer Creek moving forward. To Lawton’s benefit, two of those teams are out of the district and the Wolverines will be chasing Choctaw and Deer Creek this fall. They’re hoping that 2022 brings the return of the Wolverines that we got used to seeing when 6A-2 first began.
