One of Pennsylvania’s premier talents, and current top-ranked 2023 prospect, announced this past Wednesday that he has made the decision to commit to West Virginia University. That top prospect being Laurel Highland’s [player_tooltip player_id="27735" first="Rodney" last="Gallagher"] III. The top two players on our, soon-to-be released, updated 2023 rankings have made their future intentions known. The first being Wyomissing’s [player_tooltip player_id="127235" first="J’ven" last="Williams"], the 5-star offensive linemen committing to Penn State University this past February.
After Williams’ announcement, Penn State University seemingly had a stranglehold to bring in the best recruiting class amongst Pennsylvania prospects. You can very well continue this argument even today as PSU is still holding commitments from the following prospects.
<span style="text-decoration: underline; font-size: 18pt;"><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="66053" first="Jameial" last="Lyons"] | 6’4, 220 | DL/LB | Roman Catholic</strong></span>
<span style="text-decoration: underline; font-size: 18pt;"><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="139966" first="Lamont" last="Payne"] | 6’1, 175 | DB | Chartiers Valley</strong></span>
<span style="text-decoration: underline; font-size: 18pt;"><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="97607" first="Joey" last="Schlaffer"] | 6’6, 205 | TE | Exeter Township</strong></span>

The PSU 2023 haul is still mightily impressive, especially with the month-old addition of Roman Catholic defender [player_tooltip player_id="66053" first="Jameial" last="Lyons"]. Looking at the landscape with a perspective on the future, Penn State is still well and away the favorite to dominate 2023 Pennsylvania commitments. PSU is in the running for the majority of the top-ranked unsigned prospects that are left on the board, those being running backs [player_tooltip player_id="27732" first="Marquese" last="Williams"] and [player_tooltip player_id="248673" first="London" last="Montgomery"], as well as LB [player_tooltip player_id="27734" first="Semaj" last="Bridgeman"] and WR [player_tooltip player_id="87844" first="Kenny" last="Johnson"]. Also good news for PSU, 4-star DB [player_tooltip player_id="27730" first="Rahmir" last="Stewart"] put the Nittany Lions in his Top 6 earlier this week.
All of this being said, momentum has begun to slightly shift in West Virginia’s favor. Here is current 2023 PA recruiting class for the Mountaineers;
<span style="text-decoration: underline; font-size: 18pt;"><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="27735" first="Rodney" last="Gallagher"] III | 6’0, 160 | ATH | Laurel Highlands </strong></span>
<span style="text-decoration: underline; font-size: 18pt;"><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="27736" first="Josiah" last="Trotter"] | 6’2, 220 | LB | St. Joseph’s Prep </strong></span>
<span style="text-decoration: underline; font-size: 18pt;"><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="87079" first="Jahiem" last="White"] | 5’9, 190 | RB/ATH | William Penn</strong></span>

Much like Penn State, West Virginia is also heavily in the mix to land many of the top-25 recruits are still unsigned. 3-star recruits like [player_tooltip player_id="66046" first="Kion" last="Wright"] and [player_tooltip player_id="103987" first="Cooper" last="Young"] have been recruiting priorities for the Mountaineers, as has 3-star TE [player_tooltip player_id="140949" first="Markus" last="Dixon"]. The largest domino to fall when painting this picture may end up being where 4-star ATH/LB [player_tooltip player_id="27733" first="Ta’Mere" last="Robinson"] decides to play college ball, as both Penn State and West Virginia made his Top 10 back in November.
Deeper sleepers to consider are Thomas Jefferson’s [player_tooltip player_id="64014" first="Jordan" last="Mayer"], [player_tooltip player_id="248930" first="Yazeed" last="Haynes"] and [player_tooltip player_id="27738" first="Ronel" last="Nukah"]. Mayer and Haynes currently have offers out of West Virginia, with said offer being an early one for Mayer. Haynes also put WVU in his top two along with Rutgers University, from which he recently decommitted. [player_tooltip player_id="27738" first="Ronel" last="Nukah"] might be a great addition to the program that could secure the top recruiting class for Penn State further down the road.
As always, best of luck to each and every prospect as well as their families.
