Continue ReadingThe 2023s have been taking advantage of this Twitter Community series. In Part I and II I dove into the film of 20 total members of the Class of 2023. In Part III we add 10 more from the class. Today’s group of 10 have athletes that could play from the D3 up to the D1 level. Take a look at what I think they have to offer, what they can improve on, and make sure to check them out for yourself, coaches!
Avery Kurth Avery Kurth 6'0" | 200 lbs | ATH Slinger | 2023 State WI , ’23 DB- Slinger
The 6’ 200 lbs athlete is a two way tone setter for Slinger. The name of the game for Avery is physicality. I have a feeling that other athletes still feel him when they wake up on Saturday mornings. On defense, Avery is a three level player. He has no issue playing down at the line of scrimmage. He is a hammer when it comes to tackling. His ability to run his feet through contact is exceptional. Avery is equally as talented at roaming the deep half of the field, reading the QB, and closing to the catch point where he has the ball skills to create turnovers. Kurth isn’t just that physical defender. He is a gifted athlete who has the range to play deep and make plays from sideline to sideline and up to the line of scrimmage. On offense, Kurth runs behind his pads and churns his legs through contact to create consistent yards after contact. He adds a three down threat by being a reliable option out of the backfield where he is a mismatch for LBs, and a problem to tackle for DBs. It is tough to find a glaring area of weakness in his game, but if I wanted to see one area of improvement it would be in his hip fluidity/change of direction. He slides well, but if he can become more effective at changing direction it will amplify him at the safety and RB positions. Big fan of this dude. Avery should play at a high level at the collegiate level.
Charlie Wermers Charlie Wermers 6'2" | 220 lbs | ATH Milwaukee Marquette | 2023 State WI , ’23 ATH- Milwaukee Marquette
The 6’1″ 215 lbs RB/LB played a key role in the middle of the field on both sides of the ball. On offense, Charlie is a north-south, power runner who relies on yards after contact and falling forward when drug down. Charlie does a good job of playing to his strengths while carrying the ball, however at the next level I believe he is a better prospect on defense. Wermers stands out as a run defender. He has a solid combination of power, size, and strength to be able to stop the run in the box. He mirrors running backs well, and meets them in the hole. At the next level, I believe he is best as a first/second down LB where he will be used to stop the inside run. To take his effectiveness to the next level I want t o see him improve his lateral agility so that he can make blockers miss and easily slide while mirroring more athletic RBs. I’m excited to see him on the field as a senior. Big year could be on the way for the two way Marquette playmaker.
Jahquan Redding Jahquan Redding 5'11" | 180 lbs | WR Greenfield | 2023 State WI , ’23 WR- Greenfield
The 5’11″ 175 lbs 2023 is one of the top WRs in the state. The All region, Team MVP is an eye catching playmaker. As a junior he made plays at WR, wildcat QB, kick returner, and DB. His vision and speed allow him to take over games out in the open field. As a receiver, Jahquan creates his separation with his play speed. He was used to attack down the field, and up the seam where he could pull away from defenders. Redding has repeatedly demonstrated strong hands making catches outside the framework of his body, and through contact. Redding rounds of his game by being a willing blocker in the run game. To take his game to the next level I want to see him work on his route running. If he can carry his speed through his breaks better then it will only make him even more of a dangerous option. The more ways you can create consistent separation the better. Definitely an exciting target to know.
Nick Bundza Nick Bundza 6'0" | 190 lbs | ATH Westosha Central | 2023 State WI , ’23 ATH- Westosha Central
The 6’ 185 lbs soon to be senior is an interesting prospect. He is a tweener as he is built more in the mold of a safety/DB, but he lines up in the box as an LB. At the next level he most likely will have to slide back to the safety position because of his size, or find a role as a third down coverage option at LB. Being undersized for the LB position hasn’t been terrible for him, though. Nick plays out in space well. When ball carriers get out on the edge he is able to play with equal athleticism as he chases them down or sticks with them through cuts and jukes. Nick has also proven to be effective in coverage where he is able to easily slide and read the QB from his zone or cover TEs attacking the middle of the field in man. As for areas to improve, he needs to continue to fill out his frame adding the strength needed for the next level no matter the position he plays. To make himself as valuable as possible I want to see him become even more lock down in coverage. That means improving his ability to slide and feel receivers entering his zone as well as being able to handle the physicality of playing man on TEs and RBs. Providing that third down value will be key to attracting teams from the next level.
Cameron Groves Cameron Groves 6'4" | 205 lbs | ATH Slinger | 2023 State WI , ’23 K- Slinger
The 6’3″ 195 lbs kicker has a next level caliber leg. The ball launches off his foot on kickoffs with power that easily carries the ball through the endzone ensuring no chance of a return. Cameron also has impressive control over his kicks. He has shown that he can pooch it down into open areas for his unit to get to before the return team can. His onside/squib kicks are also very difficult to corral allowing his unit to swarm and recover the ball. The only real question based on film is his accuracy on field goals. That is only because we don’t get much of a look at that area of his game. Either way, Groves is a big leg that can set up defenses with great field position after his kickoffs.
Max Masayesva, ’23 ATH- Lakeland Union
The 6’ 180 lbs athlete’s film shows a big play waiting to happen. His most obvious trait is his next level speed. Max has been timed at a reported 4.53 in the 40, and there is no question it translates to the field. He easily takes the top off the defense, and he is just as dangerous after the catch thanks to his short area agility. He uses that agility to also be an effective, space crating route runner who carries his speed well through his breaks. All that athleticism also has made Max a viable, dangerous option in the return game. The one thing I want to see take a step forward this season is his hands. They are solid, but at times the ball gets into his body instead of catching it with his hands. Tighten that up, and he will be well on his way to being a solid next level prospect.
Gunnar Hanson Gunnar Hanson 6'6" | 300 lbs | OL Waukesha West | 2023 State WI , ’23 OL- Waukesha West
The 6’5″ 300 lbs OL is an intriguing prospect. He has all the size to play at a very high level, and he has the strength to do so as well. Gunnar plays with good hand positioning. He lands punches on the chest of defenders and then drives them off the line of scrimmage and into level two in the run game. He is able to collapse defenders down the line as well. Gunnar’s strength lie in the run game at this point. I believe he fits best at guard at the next level because of his pass game. He slides pretty well, but he is best using his anchor to stop rushers while also continuing solid hand and overall length use. Where I want to see Hanson develop his game is with his body control and flexibility. When it comes to body control, if he can add the ability to adjust his leverage and position while on a block it will make him even more devastating in the run game. A jump in his knee and ankle flexibility will also help with leverage and being able to not get caught reaching. It should also allow him to move even easier. I firmly believe OL8 has a bright future, and I can see him climbing those rankings with a strong summer and fall.
Luke German Luke German 6'1" | 260 lbs | DL Slinger | 2023 State WI , ’23 DL- Slinger
Coming in a 6’1″ 260 lbs is one of the strongest athletes in WI HS football. This offseason he set a new American Raw record for his weight class with a 623 lbs squat to go along with a huge 386 lbs bench and deadlift of 507 lbs. Boy does he use that strength on the field. Luke is able to use his natural leverage to collapse the pocket in the pass game, and he is able to use a solid initial burs tout of his stance to get the leverage he needs. German has turned those lifting number into impressive athleticism that has allowed him to make pursuit plays and line up all over the DL including DE where he can set the edge and chase down ball carriers. Where I want to see him improve is with his hand fighting and pass rush moves. Right now, Luke does a good job of getting the hands inside, getting leverage, and creating separation. However, I want to see more consistent moves to disengage after he crates the separation. If he can add that he will be far more dangerous in the trenches. We could be in for a big year if he adds that to his game consistently.
Ben Burgess Ben Burgess 6'1" | 195 lbs | ATH Baraboo | 2023 State WI , ’23 P- Punter
Our #1 punter here at Prep Redzone is the 6’1″ 190 lbs Baraboo athlete. Ben is a right footed, two step approach punter allowing him to get the ball away very quickly diminishing the risk of blocks by a huge amount. He catches the ball securely with outstretched hands every time, and quickly transitions from catching to punting in split second. When needed, Burgess is able to drive the ball deep downfield with a high apex giving his coverage team time to get downfield. One area that could improve his game is furthering his flexibility. That would allow more follow through on his kicks and increase his hang time and length of his kicks. Check him out!
Conner Jensen, ’23 OL- Rhinelander
The 5’10″ 235 lbs center has surprisingly heavy hands and plays with a tenacious, violent mentality. He finishes his blocks to the dirt every chance he gets. In the run game, Conner works double teams well. He is able to team up to create movement in the interior of the trenches as well as be able to use defenders momentum against them to wash them away from the play. As for areas to improve, the most obvious one is that he needs to continue to improve his strength and add a good amount of bulk to his frame. I also want to se him as a pass blocker, so I can know if he has the anchor strength to work with. If he can work on those areas he could work himself into a prospect for the next level.
