We had dozens of submissions, so I will be working through those in a handful more articles here in our Twitter Community Film Analysis series. The first installment had 10 2023s from WI that you are going to want to be familiar with heading into the 2022 season. Today, we dive into 10 more 2023 athletes out of Wisconsin who have a lot to offer, and can become even more dangerous if they work on improving a few pieces of their game. Let’s get right into the film!
Ciano Jones, ’23 LB Greenfield
The 5’9″ 195 lbs off ball LB is an undersized prospect who is able to make an impact thanks to his ability to play out in space. Due to his lack of size he will struggle against the run at the next level. However, where he will be able to help a program is in passing situations. Ciano has shown that he can slide out over a slot receiver and stick with him down the field. His change of direction, and track speed will give him a shot at the next level. Ciano has demonstrated that he can be aggressive at the catch point, and also a reliable open field tackler. Instead of focusing on improving a weakness, with Jones it is important that he works to take those coverage strengths to the next level of development so that he can increase his value. If he is going to make it because of one area of strength it is key to be as effective in that area as you can be.
Omar Surveyor Omar Surveyor 6'1" | 170 lbs | WR Greenfield | 2023 State WI , ’23 WR- Greenfield
The 6’1″ 170 lbs WR is a downfield threat who is able to make impressive, acrobatic catches giving his QB an option he can trust. Omar has proven to be a consistent hands catcher. His ability to track the ball, and his overall ball skills, are easily his best traits. He can adjust and make plays on the ball even on less than accurate throws. His quick reflexes allow him to collect passes even when timing is off. Omar is also able to make catches on passes that are outside the framework of his body. As for areas to work on, Surveyor is raw when it comes to the nuanced areas of the WR position. If he can improve his body control and route running then Omar will be able to provide Greenfield’s next QB with not only a reliable target, but one that will be able to consistently create separation to target.
Maliq Crawford Maliq Crawford 5'11" | 165 lbs | WR Brookfield Academy | 2023 State WI , ’23 WR- Brookfield Academy
The 5’11″ 165 lbs WR is an intriguing prospect. He does a good job of using his athletic skills to create separation to get open. Maliq is a quick twitch athlete who uses that quickness to get in and out of his breaks near his top speed. After the catch, Maliq doesn’t miss a beat. He has the play speed to be able to pull away from defenders in the open field, and when defenders are close he can change direction and utilize jukes to make guys miss. That open field play led him to averaging 17 yards per reception on 40+ receptions this season. Crawford is a playmaker that could shine in the slot at the next level where he can win with that quickness. Maliq is another athlete who I wouldn’t say needs to add something to his game. Instead, he should continue to develop his quickness, change of direction, and route running so he an be even more dangerous this season.
Cooper Bresnehan Cooper Bresnehan 6'2" | 300 lbs | OL Oconomowoc | 2023 State WI , ’23 OL- Oconomowoc
Checking in at 6’2″ 300 lbs is the Oconomowoc interior offensive lineman. Cooper has a solid starting base of traits. He has the size you look for on the interior. He has demonstrated that he can be effective as a puller. He is light enough on his feet to be able to pull and trap defenders across the formation. Cooper uses his size and power well to create push in the run game by driving DL off the ball. The potential is there for Bresnehan, but he has to take what he has and push it to the next level. The major areas to focus on improving are his ankle/knee flexibility so that he can play lower, which will give him the leverage he needs to win more battles in the trenches. I also want to see his hand use and placement take a leap forward. Cooper will be a more effective blocker if he can play with better leverage and hand use. He is definitely a player to watch the development of. Big year ahead of him.
Tanner Hora Tanner Hora 6'0" | 180 lbs | QB Slinger | 2023 State WI , ’23 QB- Slinger
The 6’ 170 lbs signal caller is a prospect that should peak the interest of many programs at the next level. His best arm trait is his accuracy and ball placement. Hora’s highlights illustrate that ability to put it where only his guy can come down with it as well as threading the needle in tight windows. Where he ]shines overall is with his mobility. Tanner can buy time in the pocket and he can hurt defenses on the ground. I believe that is why Hora has received the interest he has. Not only does he have sufficient QB traits, but he is also an intriguing athlete who could play other positions at the next level. That versatility is very valuable to college programs. As far as his QB play, I want to see him take his arm strength to the next level, as well as continue to add bulk/muscle to his frame. To be able to succeed at QB at the next level Tanner will need to put more velocity on his passes than he does at this time. If he can do that while maintaining his accuracy then the dual threat option should excite the next level.
Ben Hanson Ben Hanson 6'4" | 210 lbs | QB Madison Edgewood | 2023 State WI , ’23 QB- Edgewood
One of the top under the radar recruits in the Class of 2023 is Ben Hanson Ben Hanson 6'4" | 210 lbs | QB Madison Edgewood | 2023 State WI . The 6’3″ 190 lbs QB is going to breakout this year, so I suggest gettting on him early. The arm talent is next level without a doubt. He can deliver accurate passes from the pocket or on the run. He is also accurate while utilizing different arm angles, when he is under duress, or when his feet aren’t perfectly set. When he is in the pocket and he can throw in rhythm you get a QB who can pinpoint his passes with spot on accuracy, so that way only his guy has a shot at bringing the ball in. I’m a big fan of Hanson’s ability to throw with touch. A young QB knowing when to use arm strength and when to drop the ball perfectly over the shoulder or between defenders is hard to find. I’m excited to see him lead his squad this season. Edgewood graduates a ton of playmakers this summer, so Ben being able to take control and lead the way will be key for their success this fall. That leadership as well as clutch production will be things I want to see him perform well in this fall. His ability to convert third downs, make plays in the 4th quarter, and come from behind when needed will be something I hope to follow. Keep an eye on this one.
Mason Wells Mason Wells 6'3" | 210 lbs | DB Pulaski | 2023 State WI , ’23 DB- Pulaski
The 6’3″ 210 lbs safety has an exceptional frame for the position. One concern for bigger safeties is do they have the range to continue playing on the back half of the defense at the next level. I believe that Mason does have that range. He eats up ground’ especially when attacking down hill. He is a three level talent, but he thrives when he can use his physicality. Wells is very good when playing against the run. He has the strength to disengage blocks meaning he can play near the box or line of scrimmage. He also can line up deep and fly downhill to stuff the run. Mason ensures he is a three level player by repeatedly proving he can roam deep downfield and break up passes or deliver well timed hits to remove receiver from football. When mason can focus on using his physicality he is at his best. So, I wouldn’t be surprised if a team moved him to LB, but I do think he can stay deep and make an impact. As for areas to work on, I want to see Mason in coverage. To excel in that area he needs to continue working on his change of direction and hip fluidity. That would allow him to play more man coverage instead of just roaming over the top. The more he can do the better. Even if he moves to LB at the next level, having that man coverage ability will skyrocket his value. Big fan of this dude and his potential.
Jack Peterson, ’23 ATH- Southern Door
Next up is the 6’ 185 lbs athlete out of Southern Door. Jack did it all for them. He played mostly safety and QB. At the next level, I predict Jack plays on the defensive side of the ball. He wins with his athleticism. Athleticism that includes 4.59 40 speed, and a 36″ vertical. That translates to the field in the form of range, play speed, and burst. On offense, Peterson is most dangerous on the ground where he is able to cut, juke, and weave his way through the defense with that start stop ability and vision. On defense, Jack is a sideline to sideline, rangy safety. Don’t let the athleticism fool you, though. Jack is a reliable tackler who limits yards after contact with solid hits and good wrap up tackling technique. Where I want to see Jack improve this offseason is with his ball skills. On his INTs the ball got into his chest and he had to cradle it instead of catching it with his hands. Being more natural at the catch point will allow him to turn those turnovers into even bigger plays after the catch. I’m pumped to see how he is used this fall.
Aiden Cipolletti Aiden Cipolletti 6'3" | 200 lbs | WR Indian Trail | 2023 State WI , ’23 ATH- Indian Trail
The 6’3″ 185 lbs WR is a name to know this fall. If he can further his development this offseason it could lead to a breakout season in 2022. Aiden was used heavily as a deep threat and in the short, quick passing game. Both scenarios allowed him to use his usually superior length to create separation at the catch point. His ability to catch with his hands while boxing out or going up and over DBs is key to his game. After the catch, Aiden has some shake and wiggle to him allowing him to get some yards after the catch, but he is at his best when he can use his body to get yards making him a solid red zone option. I am also impressed with his body control. That body control is key to his style of play at the catch point, and it also helps him make plays along the sideline where he needs to be able to contort his body while also toe tapping his feet in bounds. To take his game to the next level, I want to see him take his change of direction to the next level. He is a bit of a long strider, an that is an issue for most long striders. If he can add that ability to change directions it can add another fold to his game, and a new way to create separation.
Sean Fogel Sean Fogel 6'1" | 185 lbs | QB Beloit Turner | 2023 State WI , ’23 QB- Beloit Turner
The 6’1″ 185 lbs QB doesn’t possess the prototypical size, but that doesn’t seem to effect his game play. Sean is able to generate an impressive amount of velocity on his passes when he needs it based on the coverage and windows he faces. His sharp, clean footwork pairs with a compact, quick throwing motion to create that velocity. Velocity that has no problem staying on the ball 30+ yards downfield. The best part is that Sean is able to keep that velocity even when under duress with pressure in his face, and off his back foot. Fogel is able to place the ball with consistent accuracy to the short, intermediate, and deep parts of the field. His ability to hit his receivers in tight windows, and right in stride, was key on several big yards after the catch plays on his highlight tape. As for what to work on, when it comes to Sean it is less about developing his weaknesses and more about taking his strengths to the next level. I want to see his arm strength take a step forward along with his already solid technique and footwork. I have seen clips of his offseason work, and I’m excited for what his senior season is going to look like. Breakout year on the horizon at this rate. Keep an eye on this dude. He is going to be a fast riser.
