Three quarterbacks – all of whom are in dramatically different systems and roles – a tight end who recently picked up his first college offer and a team-leading running back appearing like he’s a 1,000-yard rusher in the making each have spent much of the first half of their football offseason with all eyes on 2022.
We’ve seen changes in them, and based on what we know about their respective squads, believe each could develop into something truly special this fall.
Daniel Stanley, QB, Aynor
Aynor coach Jason Allen knows exactly what his Hammer offense can do when it’s got the right tools in place. Recently, he advised us to “watch out” for Stanley. Last year, the then-junior rushed for 585 yards and four touchdowns on 49 carries while backing up Garrison Gasque Garrison Gasque 6'2" | 175 lbs | DB Aynor | 2022 State SC . If you don’t have a calculator handy, that’s just shy of 12 yards a carry. Stanley has had a dynamic spring in the weight room (and baseball diamond) and might be the most productive ball carrier this team has had under Allen.
Hudson Spivey Hudson Spivey 6'4" | 230 lbs | QB Pee Dee Academy | 2023 State SC , QB, Pee Dee Academy
After three years as the starter at PDA, we’re not sure what else Spivey (pictured) has to do to prove himself. While never playing more than 11 games in a season, he’s already thrown for 5,700 yards and 75 touchdowns (and run for another seven). But what we saw last fall was the next stage of his growth. After completing 58-percent of his passes as a sophomore, that figure jumped to 66.2 percent last fall. This year, Pee Dee Academy’s 6-foot-4 quarterback may flirt with the 70-percent mark, an elite threshold at any level.
Nic Brown Nic Brown 6'4" | 220 lbs | ATH Kingstree | 2023 State SC , TE, Kingstree
After you see that Brown had 34 tackles for loss, 56 solo stops, forced five fumbles and blocked four punts, you’re probably thinking “Dude, you’ve got him on the wrong list.” But then we point out two more things. First, the 6-foot-2, 225-pounder also caught 20 passes for 398 yards last year. Secondly, defenses aren’t going to be able to double him as much with all the talent pooled from the merger of C.E. Murray and Kingstree.
Jaret Yonker, QB, Waccamaw
The Warriors’ big quarterback got a chance to develop a bit more last year, when he threw for 1,076 yards, rushed for another 271 and totaled 10 touchdowns in just eight games. He’s pretty good on the designed scrambles – at 6-foot-3 and 200 pounds he’s not exactly easy to bring down. But his biggest attribute is that he helps the Warriors stretch the field better than they’ve been able to in maybe a decade. Another offseason could aid in that regard even more.
Malachi Washington Malachi Washington 5'9" | 160 lbs | RB Myrtle Beach | 2024 State SC , RB, Myrtle Beach
It took one look at Washington during one of his track meets this fall to realize that he’s not only put on some decent muscle since the end of 2021, but he’s also gotten faster. Relatively buried among the belief that Myrtle Beach is only a passing team, Washington quietly put up 758 yards and seven touchdowns for the Seahawks last season. With the two biggest stars from that team now playing collegiately, more of the load will fall on Washington’s shoulders.
