I spent the majority of the last ten days in Oklahoma City for the state basketball tournaments. As many know, I also run our sister site Prep Hoops Oklahoma, covering high school basketball within this state. You can check out all of our state tourney and post tourney coverage there. But in this post, we get back to football. And during the state tournament, there were so many football players who played incredibly well during the state tournament. This is our first ever "All Hoops Team". We take a look at six players who are not only stars on the gridiron but they were stars in the state basketball tournaments. There are so many good athletes in Oklahoma that can showcase the ability to be a high profile prospect in multiple sports.
[player_tooltip player_id="122426" first="Bai" last="Jobe"] - 2023 Defensive Lineman - Community Christian (Most Valuable Player)
Community Christian junior standout [player_tooltip player_id="122426" first="Bai" last="Jobe"] was the best dual-sport athlete we saw during the state tournament and it got us thinking. What if Jobe only focused on basketball? We don’t think there’s any doubt that he would end up being a high profile prospect on the basketball court. But the ceiling is certainly higher on the gridiron, where he’s already considered an All American and has offers from just about every Power Five school in the country. Jobe reminds us a lot of former Union basketball and football standout Jeff Mead. Just a long and dynamic athlete that causes plenty of problems on both the hardwood and the gridiron. Mead ended up going the football route and Jobe will do the same. But he was absolutely dominant during the state tournament as he helped lead Community Christian all the way to the 3A state championship game. But the Royals lost to Millwood on a buzzer beater in the title game.
[player_tooltip player_id="101409" first="Joshua" last="Udoumoh"] - 2022 Athlete - Victory Christian
Another prospect that we can make an argument that he should be a D1 prospect at both basketball and football. Victory Christian’s [player_tooltip player_id="101409" first="Joshua" last="Udoumoh"] is certainly more polished on the basketball floor and it feels like he’s been a basketball-first prospect for two years now. But man he’s a fantastic athlete and it doesn’t take long watching his football highlights to get excited about the raw athletic potential you would get to work with at the next level. But in the state tourney, Udoumoh helped lead Victory all the way to the 4A title game before losing to powerhouse Kingfisher. Udoumoh was still special throughout and earned All Tourney honors.
[player_tooltip player_id="215200" first="Ladainian" last="Fields"] - 2024 Wide Receiver - Southeast
Southeast had a fantastic run in basketball this season as they made it all the way to the Class 5A semifinals before running into the Tulsa Memorial buzzsaw. Leading them on the basketball court was arguably their best football prospect over the next two years and that’s sophomore [player_tooltip player_id="215200" first="Ladainian" last="Fields"]. The sophomore standout is also their leading scorer in basketball and as of right now, it’s hard to pick one sport over the other in terms of what the highest ceiling for Fields is. Which is a good thing because he’s incredibly talented at both and should have options down the road. But when it comes to him as a wide receiver, he’s one of the more underrated talents in the state.
[player_tooltip player_id="283223" first="Landon" last="LaGasse"] - 2022 Wide Receiver - Cashion
From the opening game of the state tournament, Cashion senior standout [player_tooltip player_id="283223" first="Landon" last="LaGasse"] seemed determined to prove that Cashion had a "big four" and not just a "big three". LaGasse came out on fire in their first round win from beyond the arc and would keep that consistency throughout the tournament. Unfortunately for the senior-led Cashion bunch, they ran into a sophomore superstar in Dayton Forsythe and Dale in the title game and had to settle for silver. But LaGasse was easily one of the best players in the 2A state tournament field. This came after a senior season in football in which he led the state in touchdown receptions.
[player_tooltip player_id="101399" first="Marcus" last="Dockins Jr."] - 2022 Athlete - Moore
Unfortunately we have another prospect that had to settle for silver with Moore senior standout [player_tooltip player_id="101399" first="Marcus" last="Dockins Jr."] after the Lions fell to Edmond North in the Class 6A state championship game. But we’ll say this, the Lions were not one of the teams projected to make it all the way to the title game. They knocked off PC West in the first round and then after Santa Fe upset Edmond Memorial, the Lions beat the Wolves to advance to Championship Saturday. And Dockins was a big reason why the Lions made it there. He was their leading scorer coming into the tournament and he finished the tourney with a strong showing and was one of the top players in the 6A tourney.
[player_tooltip player_id="57205" first="Rickey" last="Hunt Jr"] - 2023 Running Back - Millwood
The only state champion to make the list is Millwood junior standout [player_tooltip player_id="57205" first="Rickey" last="Hunt Jr"]. The Falcons won their 16th state championship in school history on a buzzer beater to beat Community Christian. The story of the tournament for Millwood were two freshmen but Hunt was the consistent leader throughout the tournament. You can tell that he’s a true football player playing basketball as he’s very physical on the floor and was able to get other playmakers involved and allow them to carry the team to a gold ball. Hunt has been a playmaker for the Falcons since his freshman season and after missing the football playoffs last year, this gold ball in basketball should make him hungry for more next season.
