This class of juniors, on the defensive side of the ball, are some of the most hard hitting, high flying, high motor players in the city of San Antonio. The class of 2023 gave us sneak peak last time, at the amount of talent on the gridiron around the area and in the state. Let’s dive into our class of 2024 defensive sleeper players in San Antonio and see why they are to be recognized as such!
Brody Maresh- 6’4 240Ibs/DE/ New Braunfels High School
Analysis: Brody Maresh possesses a tall solid frame which is vital at the defensive end position. He is great at stopping the run and does an excellent job at using his hands to shed blocks. Mr. Maresh is also a very good tackler and he is quick off of the ball for his size. Even though he is underdeveloped, he still plays bigger then what he actually is. Finally, he plays tough hard nose football in the trenches which allows his teammates to feast in the game as well.
Paul Mencke- 6’2 179Ibs/SS/ Samuel Clemens High School
Analysis: Paul Mencke is what you need at the safety position! He is a very hard hitting safety and is not afraid to come up to make a tackle in the open field or in the gaps. Next, he has good jump ball skills while maintaining a tall slender frame. His pursuit to the ball is great as well. Mr. Mencke is great in zone coverage and is a very disciplined sound football player. This kid has the potential to wreck havoc against any offense this upcoming season and he is just a junior! He will make some noise for himself this upcoming season!
Kehinde Atunrase- 6’3 220Ibs/ DE,TE/ Cole High School
Analysis: Kehinde Atunrase is definitely a guy you need to keep your eye on the next two years. He was 1st Team All-District last year, as well as newcomer of the year his sophomore season! Kehinde is a tremendous run blocker and has put plenty of defenders on the ground. He plays both sides of the ball while being a beast at both! His long arms and physical play allows him to create separation from offensive linemen when they try to block him, and that allows his to wreak havoc in the run game. He possesses good technique and strength at the defensive end position as well. Then, he uses his long arms to deflect passes at the line of scrimmage and is a very good tackler! He is not an athlete you want to turn your eye from these next two years!
Jaiden Haygood- 6’0 190Ibs/OLB/ Converse Judson High School
Analysis: Jaiden Haygood is a freak of nature. He has a solid 6’0 190Ibs frame, but with great speed and hits extremely hard. Talk about old school, he takes on blocks with authority while still making the play by himself! He possesses great strength for a man his size. Also, he is good in man coverage with very good closing speed on the quarterback. Then, he can blitz well too! Mr. Haygood plays with a high motor which is what you need from your linebackers in crucial games! I will not be surprised when this young man starts reeling in offers this upcoming 2022 fall football season.
Abdon Mata – 6’3 225Ibs/DE/ Cibolo Steele High School
Analysis: Abdon Mata racked up twenty tackles, six tackles for loss, three sacks, eleven hurries, and one forced fumble last season! He fights off blocks very well and is relentless in his pursuit to the ball carrier. Mr. Mata is also physical at the point of attack. He uses his weight and strength to bring down ball carriers fairly quickly which makes him an excellent run stopper. Also, he consistently makes sure he has a low pad level when blowing past linemen while using his long arms to swim and swat off blocks. Trust me, if you want to stop this young man, you will need all the help you can get! Abdon Mata is another underrated player that will turn some heads this season!
