Man, the OAA and Lakes Valley conferences have it good. Heck, I was even going to include the Catholic Central League, but all coaches are also being retained there. We have many long-tenured coaches in these leagues and quite a few coaches hired within the past three years, but only three programs are hiring new head coaches. This newsletter will briefly outline which programs are making a change at Head Coach.
New Head Coach
Andrew Micovich – Milford
The new man in charge at Milford is Andrew Micovich, who served as Milford’s offensive coordinator last season. An in-house promotion, the administration over at Milford was very impressed by Micovich’s leadership and dedication to the program. He played a significant role in Milford’s bounceback season, as Milford went 7-3 on the year after going 1-6 in 2020. Having coached around the area since 2012, this is an opportunity that he is undoubtedly prepared for. The offensive-minded coach will likely retain most of the staff, and hopefully, Milford will continue their upward trajectory. The next logical step forward for the program is to begin competing with teams like South Lyon and Lakeland while earning some much-needed playoff experience and, more importantly, playoff victories.
Teams Searching for a Head Coach
Royal Oak
According to his Twitter, Ray McMann has stepped down as Royal Oak’s head football coach. This program has struggled as of late, and they’re going to have to find a coach with a solid plan for their running back talent, as well as the holes they may have to fill in terms of secondary help as other coaches. This job will likely be a multi-year rebuild process that will include a culture change, recruitment of athletes, etc.
Troy Athens
Holly has stolen Billy Keenist from Troy Athens in a surprise move, leaving the RedHawks coachless. This is undoubtedly a big job to watch, especially since this team has shown slow improvement over the past few years. Now, Troy Athens has a good talent, and they had a shaky 2021 season, winning their first four games and then dropping the last 4. To keep this momentum going, this hire needs to be correct.
