Some of California’s top under the radar players will gather at Santa Margarita High School on Sunday to compete in front of scouts and college coaches.
97 players from all over the state will be in attendance. I have seen the list of players and here are some of the defensive players that I have watched play and/or am looking forward to seeing.
Samarai Anderson, Centennial
I first saw Anderson at the Marina passing tournament last summer. The Huskies won the tournament and during the preliminary rounds I talked to one of the defensive coaches and asked which players were impressing him the most that day. After mentioning Notre Dame signee [player_tooltip player_id="25243" first="Jaden" last="Mickey"], Anderson was the second name he mentioned. He had 39 tackles. 3.5 sacks, an interception and two forced fumbles. He is a strong guy who could play safety at the next level or move into the box at outside linebacker.

Owen Burnside, Tesoro
Tesoro struggled last season but a lot of that can be attributed to strength of schedule and a young roster. The Titans always have good defensive ends who can move off the edge and Burnside is one of those guys. He had 53 tackles and 8.5 sacks as a junior last season and earned First Team All-South Coast League honors. I was recently covering a basketball tournament at Tesoro and ran into the head football coach and asked which returners I should keep an eye on and Burnside was the first name he mentioned. Jake Frey was second on Tesoro’s team in tackles as a junior last season and will also be competing on Sunday.

Donovan Comestro, Santa Margarita
I was a part of the selection committee for the Orange County Register’s All County team, which is a very hard list to make considering the talent in Orange County. Comestro was mentioned frequently and nearly made the list. He was second on the team in tackles with 70 and had a team-high three interceptions which earned him First Team All-Trinity League honors. He flies around in the secondary and matched up with some of the top offensive skill players in the country.

[player_tooltip player_id="168733" first="Brad" last="Gerken"], San Clemente
San Clemente’s defense is always fast to the ball and physical. Gerken fits that mold perfectly and is tailor made to play at San Clemente. He had 65 tackles and an interception as a junior this season and earned First Team All-South Coast League honors. He is just a hair under 6 feet tall and is around 185 pounds. He claims to have 4.5 40 yard speed and will we see on Sunday.

Wyatt Mosier, Yorba Linda
Yorba Linda was the most underrated great team in Orange County last season and they got "rewarded" by having to be in the Division 2 playoffs and play an elite Bishop Amat program. Mosier was the team’s best defensive player with 134 tackles, 3.5 sacks and three forced fumbles. He is a pretty big inside linebacker at 6-foot-2 and 215 pounds and moves very well. Mosier was one of the public school players to make First Team All-County.

[player_tooltip player_id="115475" first="Hasani" last="Scott"], Los Alamitos
Los Alamitos is so loaded at the skill positions, otherwise Scott would have been a major contributor at the varsity level. He has track level speed and will be able to put on some muscle without sacrificing that speed. He works against elite Power 5 level receivers in practice which helps his game. I expect him to be one of the better athletes on Sunday.

Treyvon Tolmaire, Mission Viejo
He already has excellent football instincts and has a nose for the ball. He made big plays at cornerback against some of the top teams in the state like Sierra Canyon. I am interested to see how his speed and athletic numbers are on Sunday because the football skills are certainly there.

Kyle Yamano, San Clemente
San Clemente linebackers always put up big numbers and with the departure of Cole Robertson, Yamano could be next in line to put up 80-100 tackles as a senior. He is already a quality pass rusher and had two sacks. He is a 4.7 GPA student and I am sure the Ivy League schools will be sending him recruiting info this offseason.
