There are nine tight ends in the top 200 and 13 tight ends overall for the Class of 2023 in Missouri in the Prep Redzone database. Today we are taking a closer look at the top five. (Click on the player names to check out their prospect pages on PRZ, including links to their HUDL highlights.)
1. Mac Markway Mac Markway 6'4" | 250 lbs | TE De Smet | 2023 State MO , De Smet
The state of Missouri was loaded with a deep group of talented tight ends in the Class of 2022 but so far the same can’t be said for the Class of 2023 in the Show Me State, though this group has two high-level prospects at the top.
Leading the way is Markway, a 6-foot-4, 250-pound man child who is ranked as the No. 3 overall prospect in Missouri in the junior class. Markway, who comes from a family of tight ends and has relatives who have played the position in college at Iowa, Ohio State and South Carolina, helped De Smet make back to back appearances in the state championship game in his first two seasons but unfortunately missed his junior season with an injury.
Markway attracted scholarship offers from just about every top program in the country before committing to the University of Florida. He has since decommitted after the coaching change with the Gators and is now once again looking at his options.
2. Brett Norfleet Brett Norfleet 6'7" | 240 lbs | TE Francis Howell | 2023 State MO , Francis Howell (Missouri)
Norfleet, a 6-7, 215-pounder, was listed as a defensive lineman in our previous pre-season rankings update but we moved him to tight end, his expected college position, with this update. He checks in as the No. 6 overall prospect in Missouri in the Class of 2023.
Norfleet entered high school as a standout Division I prospect in both football and baseball, where he’s a right-handed pitcher, and has committed to play both sports at the University of Missouri after attracting scholarship offers from coast to coast.
Norfleet was Howell’s second-leading receiver this fall when he caught 26 passes for 415 yards and five touchdowns. He had 14 catches for 219 yards and one touchdown as a sophomore and nine receptions for 107 yards and two scores as a freshman when he also had 17 tackles and four sacks.
3. Zach Ortwerth Zach Ortwerth 6'5" | 220 lbs | TE St. Louis University High | 2023 State MO , St. Louis University High
Ortwerth, a 6-5, 220-pounder who also plays defensive end/outside linebacker, isn’t at the elite level of Markway or Norfleet but looks like a Division I prospect with his combination of size and athleticism.
Ortwerth, who also plays basketball, was SLUH’s third-leading receiver this fall — behind Division I prospects Chris Brooks and Ryan Wingo Ryan Wingo 6'2" | 200 lbs | WR St. Louis University High | 2024 State MO — with 20 receptions for 298 yards and four touchdowns. He also added 76 tackles and two sacks on defense.
4. Eli Youman Eli Youman 6'6" | 235 lbs | TE Blue Springs | 2023 State MO , Blue Springs
Youman is another tight end/defensive end with good size (6-6, 235) who should attract a lot of attention from college coaches going into his senior season.
5. Ryan Doehring Ryan Doehring 6'5" | 210 lbs | TE Chaminade | 2023 State MO , Chaminade
Doehring is another player, like Ortwerth and Youman, with good size at 6-5 and 210 pounds and the frame to add significant size, bulk and weight when he gets to college. He’s also, like the previous two players mentioned, a guy who also is also pretty good on the other side of the ball as well.
Doehring was credited with 39 tackles, three sacks and two fumble recoveries during his junior season. He recorded 10 tackles and one sack in two games in his sophomore season that was limited by an injury.
Next five:
Dallas Winner-Johnson Dallas Winner-Johnson 6'5" | 205 lbs | TE Cardinal Ritter | 2023 State MO , Cardinal Ritter
Watson Hafer Watson Hafer 6'4" | 210 lbs | TE West Plains | 2023 State MO , West Plains
Garrett Mahan Garrett Mahan 6'6" | 235 lbs | TE West Plains | 2023 State MO , West Plains
Carson White Carson White 6'4" | 180 lbs | TE East Buchanan | 2023 State MO , East Buchanan
Logan Minton Logan Minton 6'8" | 200 lbs | TE Lafayette | 2023 State MO , Lafayette
