Tonight, we are looking at the pass-catchers as we rattle off 10 Dakotas wide receivers that have the solid film to play at the next level. Find out all about them below!
Josh Piper Josh Piper 6'0" | 190 lbs | WR SF Washington | 2022 State | Sioux Falls Washington (SD)
I like watching how Josh can get just a little separation from the cornerback and have the range to make a high traffic catch. He also shows a lot longer reach on this senior season’s film. Josh shows great efficiency around the sidelines, being able to real in the tough catches while maintaining his solid balance. He shows solid awareness when it comes to reading where the second level of the defense is coming in and uses his great footwork to teleport out of contact. Josh shows a ton of versatility as he will line up anywhere from slot position to the outside. No offers as of yet for this young man, despite being a consistent producer in the Warriors receiving core back to back years.
Frosty Wisnewski Frosty Wisnewski WR Central Cass | 2022 State | Central Cass (ND)
What stands out most on Frosty’s film in his senior season is how much torque he has with his brakes. This kid is like a car you need to stop real quick at an upcoming stop sign, he can hit the brakes quick and stop almost on a dime right where you want him to be. I believe Frosty could develop a better high topping ability, as I think this young man has a lot more spring in his legs than he probably gets credit for. Frosty has good speed, especially when he runs a streak route with his straight line speed. Not only do I like his tape, I like how hard this kid works away from the football as he averaged nearly one pancake per game last season helping out his ball carriers ahead of the play, which is just the type of kid I want on my team. Might be more of a track/cross country prospect as he is an elite performer on the tracks, but this kid has a lot of athleticism that could be viable to the next level of college football.
Reece Proefrock Reece Proefrock 5'10" | 170 lbs | WR Vermillon | 2022 State | Vermillion (SD)
If you are looking for a versatility around the entire offensive side of the ball, look no further than Vermillion’s Reece Proefrock Reece Proefrock 5'10" | 170 lbs | WR Vermillon | 2022 State . Reece has tremendous skillsets such as speed, determination, and much more. If you are looking for a wide receiver that catches darn near every ball that comes his way during his time with the Tanagers, Proefrock is your guy. This young man also makes a lot of noise on all fronts of special teams from kickoff returns to running back on punts/kicks and having a quick trigger to get off the snap in a very quick span of time. He’s not the biggest kid on the football field, but with the massive amount of skillsets he plays with on all three levels of the field, I would be surprised if he didn’t get a shot next year, as he has no offers yet.
Trey Herrboldt Trey Herrboldt 5'11" | 155 lbs | WR RC St. Thomas More | 2022 State | Rapid City St. Thomas More (SD)
Trey does a solid job getting his speed out the gates when he makes his break. He does the little things right like blocking ahead of his ball carrier and creating a huge lane for him to run into. At cornerback, Trey’s tracking ability and vision is his best asset as he has great patience and good feel for the position. Trey gets the most explosion in his feet going to his right and I would love to see him get more even-leveled with his feet this offseason with some speed and agility drills. Trey has some great route-running abilty especially when he has to apply the brakes quick or hits his corner really quick when breaking on his slant. Trey holds two local NAIA offers, and might see another one of two pop up before National Signing Day. I would project Trey at defensive back in college.
Caleb Klabunde Caleb Klabunde WR Kindred | 2022 State | Kindred (ND)
Caleb is another prospect on the list that is always a team-first player getting out in front and serving up multiple key blocks for his ball carrier. Not only does he put a weight on his back for his team, he also has great speed coming out the gates and has great longevity in his burst and speed. This kid is really instinctive on both sides of the football and can read the incoming play coming his way at a great level. He has a quick trigger when closing in on the wide receiver to make a play on the ball. He also crushes it with his contact level. I think the explosiveness on both sides of the ball make it a toss-up where he is best situated, but I know one thing he would be a fun NAIA player to watch over the next four years. Off the radar prospect big time with no offers yet.
Jacob Merxbauer Jacob Merxbauer WR Aberdeen Central | 2022 State | Aberdeen Central (SD)
Jacob does a great job with adjusting to where the ball is to give himself the best angle to make a catch. He not only has really long strides with his burst he also has a ton of size at 6’3. Jacob has the aggression I like in watching wide receivers, as his route running is powerful and he shows off a wide receiver prospect that wants to run thru the corner he is going up against instead of avoiding any contact with them. I am also a big fan of this kid’s patience when the ball drops right into his bread basket, he doesn’t overextend his body to loose balance, he just stays very relaxed yet has a lot of physicality he can use when it is necessary. A wide receiver prospect I am very surprised has not picked up more next-level opportunities as I think he might find his college football future literally right up the road.
Payton Eben Payton Eben WR Canton | 2022 State | Canton (SD)
Payton was a multiple time Big Dog of the Week during the 2021 regular season and this kid fills up a stat sheet in a multitude of ways. I really like his hands as a pass-catcher which may sound vague to say, but the way he pulls the ball into his chest show great security. Excellent route runner that can burn you at any three levels short, medium or long. He has great downhill speed that can pound thru packs of contact. He is for sure a wide receiver if the ball is in the area, he’s going to get his hands on it. Payton has had pretty light interest since before the summer, so I am intrigued as to where he will end up on National Signing Day. No offers to date.
