Class 5A, District 4: Top Offensive, Defensive Standouts

We visit the Iowa City-region of Class 5A with District 4’s top offensive and defensive players from this past season. That district includes teams like Iowa City High, Iowa City West and Davenport Central. <strong>Nate Hummel - Davenport Central - QB/LB - 5-10 - 200</strong> Listed as a linebacker and quarterback, all Nate Hummel did this past fall was lead the league in total touchdowns with 19. Hummel did this most with his legs, rushing for 964 yards and 15 scores. He did complete 51 percent of his passes for over 700 yards with three TDs, adding a receiving touchdown. Just how versatile was Hummel? He caught seven passes and also handled some kicking duties. Undersized, Hummel is just a pure athlete who gets the very most out of everything he brings to the field. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="247922" first="Drew" last="Larson"] - Iowa City High - QB - 6-1 - 165</strong> Keep an eye on sophomore quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="247922" first="Drew" last="Larson"]. The Iowa City High rising prospect took control of the offense this past year, completing over 62 percent of his passes for 1,346 yards with 16 touchdowns. Larson also showed off his athleticism with another 103 yards on the ground. City High has several younger players, so the outlook for the team remains very strong heading into 2022. Given time, Larson presents a great deep ball and excellent touch on his passes. He is capable of reading a defense quickly and reacting, finding the open receiver and hitting them in stride for a big play. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="152704" first="Caden" last="McDermott"] - Pleasant Valley - RB/LB - 5-9 - 185</strong> Opposing defenses made the mistake of underestimating [player_tooltip player_id="152704" first="Caden" last="McDermott"] in 2021. You can bet they will not do the same in 2022. Undersized, McDermott didn’t let that keep him from racking up almost 1,000 yards rushing with 13 scores. McDermott showed off his all-around skills by throwing three passing TDs and even catching three passes. And on defense, he had 19 solo tackles while also handling punt return duties for the Spartans. His skill-set allows Pleasant Valley to line McDermott up all over the field, something college coaches will definitely take interest in. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="104805" first="Nolan" last="Mosier"] - Davenport North - QB/LB - 6-4 - 210</strong> A three-sport standout with impressive size, [player_tooltip player_id="104805" first="Nolan" last="Mosier"] continues to make waves. The junior threw for over 1,400 yards this past fall with seven touchdowns while adding four more scores on the ground. With his big, strong frame, Mosier is the classic drop-back quarterback. He has great arm strength, moves his feet well in the pocket and scans the field like a cagey veteran. When Mosier is at his best, he is the top player on the field. Expect big things out of him in 2022.
