Carlsbad senior offensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id="134796" first="Ramon" last="Loya"] held more than a half dozen offers, so he had plenty of choices on where he wanted to play his college football.
He decided on Western Massachusetts.
Loya recently committed to Div. III Amherst College, one of the most prestigious and rigorous academic institutions in the country. He selected Amherst over offers from Culver Stockton, Rose Hulman, Middlebury College, University of Puget Sound and Fort Lewis. Western New Mexico showed interest.
“Amherst had a lot of contributing factors that led to my decision,” Loya told Prep Redzone New Mexico. “The academics are unparalleled. Compared with the other colleges that had offered me and were interested, only two had similar academic prestige and rigor in their programs.
“Amherst as a town is also beautiful based on the pictures I have seen, and the consortium is a contributing factor as well. The final thing was the relationship I built with the coaches based on all the conversations we had along the way.”
Loya took several virtual tours of the Amherst campus before making his decision, and plans to visit there in early 2022.
From a football perspective, Amherst has long been regarded as one of the best small college programs in New England. Loya, currently listed at 6-foot-4, 285 pounds, expects to play offensive tackle for the Mammoths.
“The Amherst coaches told me that I could come in day one and have the opportunity to compete for a starting job,” Loya said. “I would love to do that. The Amherst offense is different than Carlsbad’s, though, as it is more balanced. Although it will take some adjusting, I think I will be fine as I am an experienced run and pass blocker. I’m just excited to get there and contribute any way I can.”
Loya said he plans to arrive on the Amherst campus in August and intends to major in neuroscience with an eye on the pre-med program.
