ALBUQUERQUE – Twenty minutes or so after Logan lost by three points to district rival Fort Sumner/House in the Class 1A state championship game at The Pit, Longhorns standout forward Mason Wallin was already thinking about the next chapter of his young life.

Wallin strolled into the post-game media interview room located at the top of the Pit's legendary ramp rocking a purple New Mexico Highlands t-shirt.

While the 6-foot-5, 240-pound Wallin is a superb basketball player – he averaged about 21 points and 11 rebounds for Logan this season and scored over 1,100 points in his career – he's just as good or better as a football player.

The NM Highlands coaching staff certainly took notice. Even though Logan competes in the 6-man classification, they offered Wallin an opportunity to play football at the Division 2 level for the Cowboys, and he accepted. Wallin signed with NMHU on National Signing Day in early February.

“Highlands is a great school with great coaches and a great atmosphere,” Wallin told reporters after the game.

Wallin, who said he was recruited by NM Highlands to play tight end, acknowledged he was skeptical of his chances to play football at the college level because Logan plays six-man.

“Honestly, I didn't think it would happen,” Wallin said. “It's hard for these 1A schools to get recognized, especially six-man. But there's a lot of great talent out there in six-man and eight-man that is overlooked. There's a ton of good players.”

Wallin led Logan to the 6-man state title in November as the Longhorns rallied for a thrilling 32-31 win over Grady for its second straight championship. Last spring, Wallin won the Class 1A state shot put title at the track and field championships.

Logan head basketball coach Kyle Griffiths lauded Wallin's ‘amazing footwork' for a basketball player of his size.

“Going on to play football at the next level, Mason is going to be just fine,” Griffiths said.

Wallin (16 points & 14 rebounds in title game) and Logan appeared headed for its second consecutive Class 1A title Saturday afternoon at the Pit as the Longhorns led Fort Sumner/House, 43-38, after three quarters. But the Foxes shot a blistering 77 percent from the field (10-of-13) and a perfect 100 percent (6-6) from the free throw line in the fourth quarter to snatch the crown away from Logan.
