We are off and running – and the first week of the state championships are in the books from Gene Cox Stadium in Tallahassee.
What we watched over the three days is something that Florida high school football fans are used to seeing throughout the course of a season – top-flight talent.
From the opening game in Tallahassee, it was certainly exciting – as 1AXXX, Jacksonville Trinity Christian took care of business over Hialeah Champagnat Catholic in 2A, and in 3A, Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna won for the fourth time in five years.
SOME OF THE BEST TALENT ON DISPLAY
As we know all the results from the first weekend of the state football series, we once again bring you some of the top performers from those games – as we did throughout the season and into the playoffs:

For so many years, Madison County has been that program you can expect to be there in the end. After Saturday's 13-12 win over Hawthorne, head coach Mike Coe and his staff have already started to think about 2022.
The Cowboys and Hornets had plenty of talented prospects on display before a very spirited crowd.
On the offensive of the ball, Madison County ran very well – with Tommy House (16-82), Keshaun Mitchell (10-55) and Jamie Hampton, who had 51 yards and a score.
Hawthorne was led by [player_tooltip player_id="128320" first="Tyler" last="Jefferson"] who passed for 63 yards, but was intercepted twice. He did carry for 105 yards and both scores. Camren Cohens had three receptions for 58 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball, Keshaun Mitchell (9 tackles) was truly on his game, Trevion Gilyard (6 tackles), Latoris Young (6 tackles, 1 sack) and Ty Jarvis (6 tackles) all came up big for the Cowboys.
The Hornets also had plenty of gifted prospects making plays – with Class of 2023 standout Jailen Ruth leading the way with 11 tackles. Amari Shepard (6 tackles), Jordan Fluellen (5 tackles), Cohens (5 tackles) and Nylan Markham (sack).

Trinity Christian left no doubt winning a state title for the second straight year – with a solid defense and a running game that was sparked by junior [player_tooltip player_id="128007" first="Treyaun" last="Webb"] (22 carries, 176, scores) and Darnell Rogers (17 carries, 173, 3 scores). Freshman QB Colin Hurley finished 7 of 14 for 101 yards. Receiver Fred Highsmith caught three balls for 85 yards.
On defense, Trinity Christian's [player_tooltip player_id="164057" first="Caden" last="Morrell"] (9 tackles, 1.5 sacks), Cameron Anderson (7 tackles, 2.5 sacks), [player_tooltip player_id="111546" first="Johnathan" last="Goddard"] (6 tackles, 1 sack), Thomas Fryer (6 tackles), Tre Stewart (6 tackles).
Champagnat Catholic freshman quarterback Ennio Yapoor (21-34-332 yards passing and 53 yards rushing), and seniors Jaylin Terzado (5-68) and Marvin Sims (3-75) made a major contribution.
On defense, the Lions, [player_tooltip player_id="128735" first="Antron" last="Williams"] (13 tackles, 1 sack), Leroy James (8 tackles), Donavan Philord (7 tackles), Jaquentin Ford (6 tackles).
3A
Leave no doubt that Chaminade-Madonna is one of the best teams in the state of Florida – and its defense has been a huge reason.
Coach Dameon Jones and his Lions' defense once again led the way. The defense only yielded two scores in the past 20 quarters and no touchdowns in the state playoffs as well.
[player_tooltip player_id="50032" first="Jamaal" last="Johnson"] (7 tackles, 1 sack), [player_tooltip player_id="49988" first="Kenyatta" last="Jackson"] (6 tackles, 1 sack), Wayne Peart (5 tackles, 1 sack), [player_tooltip player_id="128802" first="D'Angelo" last="Ponds"] (5 tackles) and [player_tooltip player_id="111710" first="Jeremiah" last="McGill"] (4 tackles) all made an impact for the Lions.
The Buccaneers also had some players who stepped up. T.J. Bullard (12 tackles), Damien Henderson (9 tackles), [player_tooltip player_id="111561" first="Tre" last="Reader"] (6 tackles), D.J. Hooker (6 tackles).
