The 3A and 2A divisions continue to be dominated by schools from northeast Kansas. Here’s a quick look at some schools from the area and a preview of their third round matchups:
3A – Rock Creek (7-3) vs Frontenac (8-2):
The Mustangs barely got by Hayden 28-21 last Friday. QB Dalton Whitworth keeps rolling, with 2,580 yards and 35 touchdowns through 10 games. He has a bevy of options to throw to, led by Ethan Burgess, [player_tooltip player_id="145571" first="Daegen" last="Vinduska"] and [player_tooltip player_id="123069" first="Yanci" last="Spiller"]. Now the Mustangs must face a loaded Frontenac club led by Oklahoma State commit [player_tooltip player_id="35560" first="Landon" last="Dean"]. The Raiders’ defense has surrendered double-digits to opponents only a few times all season.
3A – Holton (10-0) vs Girard (10-0):
Two undefeateds will face off Friday. Matthew Lierz is the dual-threat quarterback that leads the Wildcats, but they have a stable of backs who all do damage. In last Friday’s blowout of Perry-Lecompton, it was Garyson Booth (188 yards on 15 carries) and Jayden Fletcher (75 yards on 12 carries) doing most of the damage. 6-foot-3 190 pound junior quarterback Luke Niggemann is the triggerman for the Trojans.
2A - Rossville (10-0) vs Riverton (8-2):
Rossville has adjusted to the shoulder injury suffered by star quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="35598" first="Torrey" last="Horak"] (who may be available soon). Fill in Corey Catron has done everything but sell popcorn for the Bulldogs. Since taking over under center, he’s completed 32-55 for 453 yards and 6 touchdowns. He has also rushed for 893 yards and 18 touchdowns, caught 12 passes for 189 yards and 2 touchdowns, all while still holding down his linebacker spot. The Riverton Rams knocked off Osage City 28-22 in overtime last Friday.
2A – Silver Lake (8-2) vs Wellsville (10-0):
Silver Lake, guided by quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="91395" first="Daigan" last="Kruger"], and St. Marys lit up the scoreboard last Friday, putting on a 51-36 show. Kruger threw for 158 yards and a score while also running for 122 and another touchdown. Finding the end zone four times was senior running back Brogan Renfro. Junior running back [player_tooltip player_id="122461" first="Nash" last="Money"] is a 5-foot-9 170 pound dynamo for Wellsville. Money has found the end zone 30 times this year, covering nearly 1,500 yards on the ground.
