This game had everything: big plays, turnovers, momentum/lead changes, and an equal opportunity for both teams to win the game! The players on the field played like it was last game they would ever play! In the end, Atascocita scored the game winning touchdown, bringing their record to 6-1. Summer Creek played a heck of a game, and here are the players that balled out.
Torrie Curry (2022) I N/A I #22 I RB
Curry was very quick with the ball in his hands. He ran with very nice pad level and his vision was on point! Easily the faster of the two primary Summer Creek backs, Curry made defenders look silly in the open field. He seemed to plant his foot in the ground and start upfield, hitting a hole that had not formed yet. That’s advanced vision folks! It helped his linemen set up the defense to take angles one way, when Curry wanted to go the opposite way the entire time! An underrated skill Curry possessed was putting two hands on the ball. I noticed he covered the ball when hitting the hole. It may not seem like a note-worthy observation, but in a game like Summer Creek v Atascocita, where last possession and turnovers were imperative, a back like Curry was needed! You could trust him. The senior finished the game with 108 yards on 15 carries, averaging 7.2 yards per attempt.
Lloyd Avant (2024) I 5’10”, 185 lbs. I #25 I RB
Avant did not go to the ground easy. His long speed was decent (he can definitely work on that, he’s only a sophomore), but boy could that kid cut on a dime. He was a very smooth runner, being patient and not just plowing his head in his lineman’s backs. He allowed the play to develop and accelerated through the hole. The Sophomore was physical, running very hard. Summer Creek did not throw the ball particularly well, so the offense leaned on Curry and Avant heavy. Outside of the QB and the WR, these two backs were the only ones getting the bulk of the carries. Curry is primed to have an extremely productive year next year as a junior, with only his long speed potentially holding him back. Avant is tough, quicker than fast, and has good vision. He will thrive in that offense for the remainder of the year, and in the future! At the end of the night, Avant had 15 carries for 72 yards, averaging 4.8 yards per touch.
Alfonso Gonzalez (2022) I 5’10” I #81 I K
A kicker Tee???? Yes, a kicker! I know, I know, outrageous, but wait….don’t leave the page yet….just read me out first! Gonzalez has a boot on him! Summer Creeks offense took a while to get into the end zone, so often the senior had to come out to attempt a field goal. By “took a while to” I meant the offense did not score a touchdown until the second half. Absolutely no negative shots at the squad, because Atascocita is a very quality team! Those were some pretty impressive kicks Gonzalez nailed! And not kicks that were inside the 20, oh no no no! Those were around the 40 yard line. Gonzalez single-handedly kept Summer Creek in the game, hitting 3 field goals in the first half. No to mention nailing each of the extra point kicks as well! Gonzalez had the golden leg Friday night. Other than a blocked field goal attempt in overtime (to no fault of his own), Gonzalez was money all night! YES, I stand my decision to put a kicker in the Stand Out Players List!
Rocky Jack (2022) I 6’0″, 260 lbs. I #91 I DL
Jack’s quickness off the line of scrimmage really stood out the me. He shot the gap fast and ferociously! He used his hands extremely well and he was strong! His size was both a strength and a weakness in his game. Playing mostly defensive tackle, Jack played low to the ground and sliced through the line often. The offensive guards could not truly get good hands on him. He would get under their pads and cause havoc in the backfield, even if he did not make the play himself. There was a 3 yard lost on one play where the Atascocita running back hit his own linemen behind the line of scrimmage. The back bounced off and was swiftly gang tackled in the backfield. Jack caused that play to happen! His motor was high, rarely coming off the field for fatigue reasons. Now for the bad. Jack gave up ground when linemen did get their hands on him (switch was rare). Same with double teams, getting pushed back instead of holding the line. That being his only flaw, I loved Jack’s game and he was my favorite player to watch for Summer Creek. Even everything was said and done, Jack tallied 6 total tackles, 4 solo, and 2 QB hurries.
The game was great, the atmosphere was great, the weather was great; there wasn’t much more you could ask for Friday night! The final results were not favorable for Summer Creek, but he team fought hard and these players were a big reason this team took Atascocita to overtime!
