The 2023 class in Michigan has a chance to be littered with top tier quarterback talent. Led by Moore, this class is full of athletic quarterbacks who’s dual threat ability represents the future of football while these kids dominate in the now. It’s rare to have this much top talent at one position, especially quarterback, so it will be fun to evaluate these players as they head into the playoffs.
Here are the top quarterbacks from the class of 2023:
Dante Moore Dante Moore 6'2" | 210 lbs | QB Detroit King | 2023 State MI
Although Moore has received national praise as a five star, his ceiling is still extraordinarily high. He has all the tools to dominate at the next level, taking advantage of his scrambling ability and keeping his eyes down the field. From a size and play style standpoint, he reminds me of Russell Wilson. His ability to command the line of scrimmage and find open targets is impressive. Out of structure, Moore does a nice job of identifying incoming rushers while still committing to making a play downfield. It’s as tough a play for a young quarterback to make, but yet Moore does it constantly. The junior is a special talent for Detroit Martin Luther King who’s already stacked up TWENTY SEVEN offers. King takes on Warren Fitzgerald in the first round of the MHSAA playoffs.
Drew Viotto Drew Viotto 6'4" | 220 lbs | QB Walled Lake Western | 2023 State MI
Comparing film, it looks like Viotto has worked on his release and technique in the pocket for this season. Viotto is getting the ball out faster which is making it easier on his receivers and especially his linemen up front. In 2021, he’s seemed calm and decisive in the pocket, almost like things have slowed down for him. His arm strength is unprecedented and his feet and hips seem square and loose, which is sometimes rare for young quarterbacks. It’s unfair to call Viotto a young quarterback anymore, however, after leading his team to a playoff birth and a matchup against Lakeland on Friday. The junior is currently contemplating six offers while expecting more as he heads into the home stretch of his high school career.
Brady Drogosh Brady Drogosh 6'5" | 205 lbs | QB De La Salle | 2023 State MI
De La Salle has played with a tough play style all season, and that doesn’t change when looking at quarterback play. Drogosh is in a tight end frame at quarterback, while having all the tools a quarterback needs. He can run, as shown in almost every game for the Pilots this season, but his arm has improved every game, along with his decision making. He shows his ability from the basketball court when he finds a hole and runs through it, being able to stay low to the ground and run over incoming defenders. Drogosh’s biggest test will come in the next month, but he’s shown he embraces the big stage and will make plays regardless.
Christian Johnson Christian Johnson 6'0" | 210 lbs | QB River Rouge | 2023 State MI
When initially doing the 2023 rankings, Johnson was someone who was intriguing as a recruit but I was wrong to not study him more. Reviewing his 2021 tape, Johnson has taken his game to another level while leading River Rouge, something that college coaches will be thrilled to see. He is calm in the pocket and doesn’t force the ball when something isn’t there. It’s great to see a QB like Johnson trust his receivers while still being somewhat inexperienced. His trust in his weapons on the outside showed up repeatedly on tape which is one of the best things you can see from a quarterback. Having trust in who you throw to can slow the game down and open up throws that are normally not there. Johnson and his River Rouge teammates will have a tough test in the first round of the MHSAA playoffs as they take on Harper Woods on Friday.
