Algona Continues To Showcase Next-Level Prospects

The pipeline out of Algona has led to many athletes finding new homes at the college level, including at Div. I programs like the University of Iowa. At the moment, the Bulldogs appear set to showcase several more future college prospects on the gridiron, including one of the top senior quarterbacks in the state, [player_tooltip player_id="23975" first="Tyler" last="Manske"]. [player_tooltip player_id="23975" first="Tyler" last="Manske"] - QB/DB - 6-2 - 195 Now the unquestioned leader of the team, [player_tooltip player_id="23975" first="Tyler" last="Manske"] helped Algona reach the state semifinals as a sophomore starting quarterback. Over the past two seasons, he has become a poised and confident signal caller, while also developing into a dual threat. Completing over 60 percent of his passes, Manske has 1,493 yards passing and 18 touchdowns with just four interceptions on the year. He has also helped take the pressure off his running backs, racking up another 266 yards on the ground. As you would expect, Manske doesn’t come off the field much. He is a key member of the Bulldog defense while also handling both punting and punt return duties. With excellent size, a strong arm and great ability to read defenses, Manske will be a nice find for a college coach when he decides on his future. Trevon Smith - RB/LB - 6-1 - 180 The main weapon for Algona is senior Trevon Smith. Smith has 36 receptions for 627 yards with 11 touchdowns, adding another 217 yards and three scores on the ground. Explosive is the best word to describe Smith on a football field. He jumps off the film when watching and appears to be even quicker in person. Once he gets by the first level, there are not many players on the field that can track him down. Smith also has made a splash on defense with three sacks and a fumble recovery. Carlos Gomez - WR/DB - 6-0 - 150 What makes it so difficult to prepare to defend Algona is that they have several options on offense. Another is Carlos Gomez, a junior who has made his presence known in a variety of roles. Gomez is averaging almost 20 yards per reception, giving the Bulldogs a true deep threat to stretch defenses. He also averages just under 11 yards per carry on the ground, showcasing excellent speed and even better field vision. Alex Manske - QB/DB - 6-2 - 180 And keep an eye out for another Manske coming through. Alex Manske, a freshman, has already made an impact on the defensive side of the ball with three interceptions, a fumble recovery and 48 tackles.
