Every Sunday, we’ll look at some of the top individual performances from the week that was in high school football. In most weeks, we’ll have ten of the best performances from across the state. Last week, we made a special exception and featured twenty. However, this week, we’re back to the ten best individual performances from week two. And week two was obviously a very friendly week to plenty of quarterbacks across the state as the majority of our top performers are QB’s. As always, send us your picks for top performers after each game. [player_tooltip player_id="200116" first="Alan" last="McKeefry"] - 2022 Quarterback - Spiro
34-45 | 465 Yards | 4 Touchdowns
The first of several quarterbacks in this feature is one that we knew the least about. Spiro senior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="200116" first="Alan" last="McKeefry"] had a lights out performance as Spiro absolutely lit up Tahlequah Sequoyah in the air game during their week two win. Spiro is once again a team to watch under first year head coach Brett Davis. And the senior quarterback is now one that we’re going to keep a close eye on. At 6’4, McKeefry certainly passes the eye test. Then throw in the fact that he threw for 465 yards and four touchdowns on 34-45 passing and he’s even more intriguing. They’re in a tough district but he’s one we’ll keep an eye on.
[player_tooltip player_id="51037" first="Austin" last="Havens"] - 2023 Quarterback - Owasso
17-20 | 285 Yards | 4 Touchdowns
Owasso quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="51037" first="Austin" last="Havens"] has either been on this list or one of several candidates for this list in each of Owasso’s first three games of the year. He has absolutely lit up opposing defenses to start his junior season and the jump he’s made from sophomore year to junior year is quite impressive. In their latest win, a blowout of Broken Arrow, Havens was nearly perfect. He threw for 285 yards and four touchdowns on 17-20 passing. We thought that he would be one of the top quarterbacks coming into this season but he’s already exceeding those expectations. Now, Owasso gets the week off before a huge district showdown on the road against Union.
[player_tooltip player_id="52273" first="Ben" last="Harman"] - 2022 Quarterback - Cashion
21-33 | 389 Yards | 6 Touchdowns | 5 Carries | 42 Yards
Cashion senior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="52273" first="Ben" last="Harman"] was at it again on Friday as the Wildcats put up monster numbers in their win over Minco. The senior QB threw for nearly 400 yards and six touchdowns on 21-33 passing. He also added 42 yards on five carries as the Wildcats improved to 2-1 on the season. Cashion has looked great, especially on the offensive side of the ball since their week zero loss to Rejoice Christian. Now the attention for Harman and the Wildcats shifts to week three and a state championship rematch against Thomas. It’s been a slow start to the year for the Terriers but you know that they’ve had this game circled since they left the field in Edmond last December with a silver ball.
[player_tooltip player_id="54349" first="Blaze" last="Berlowitz"] - 2023 Quarterback - Cushing
28-40 | 457 Yards | 6 Touchdowns
Every now and then we get a few things right. On Friday, we released five players to watch going into their match-up’s and Cushing junior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="54349" first="Blaze" last="Berlowitz"] was one of those selections. He came out in their week two match-up with Perkins-Tryon and he was firing on all cylinders. He finished with 457 yards and six touchdown passes on 28-40 passing. In the first two games of the year, Berlowitz is now 52-82 for 847 yards and nine touchdowns. In two games. The next two games will be big tests for Berlowitz and this high-powered Cushing offense. They’re on the road against Berryhill on Friday before hosting Tuttle in week four in a potential 1 VS 2 match-up in Class 4A.
[player_tooltip player_id="200111" first="Brett" last="Pense"] - 2022 Quarterback - Deer Creek
13-16 | 204 Yards | 4 Touchdowns | 27 Rushing Yards | 1 Rushing Touchdown
Deer Creek jumped up into the 6A-2 rankings this weekend and the Antlers are looking really good off to a 3-0 start. One of the standouts for Deer Creek in the early part of the season has been their senior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="200111" first="Brett" last="Pense"]. In their week two win over Yukon, Pense was outstanding once again. He threw for just over 200 yards and four touchdowns and only had three incompletions on the day. He also added nearly 30 yards and a rushing touchdown as the Antlers took care of business and improved to 3-0 on the year. Now, they have a bye week before opening up district play in week four. At this point, you have to seriously consider Deer Creek a threat in the westside district of 6A-2.
[player_tooltip player_id="38671" first="Carson" last="May"] - 2022 Quarterback - Jones
13-18 | 289 Yards | 5 Touchdowns
After losses to Bethany and Lincoln Christian in the first two weeks, it was time for a bounce back from Jones as they faced off with Luther in week two. Iowa commit [player_tooltip player_id="38671" first="Carson" last="May"] showed why he’s the top senior quarterback prospect in the state by dismantling the Lion defense and making it look easy. In their blowout victory, May threw for nearly 300 yards and five touchdowns on just 13-18 passing. May and the Longhorns are still one of the best teams in Class 2A and the 0-2 start shouldn’t discourage anyone. This is a very good football team and they’ll continue to be near the top of Class 2A as they go into district play.
[player_tooltip player_id="38818" first="Carson" last="Trimble"] - 2023 Quarterback - Grove
8-8 | 117 Yards | 3 Touchdowns | 2 Carries | 60 Yards | 1 Touchdown
It was a perfect night for Grove junior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="38818" first="Carson" last="Trimble"]. While the yardage might be as high as some of the other quarterbacks, he didn’t need it as they took care of their week two game with Jay. Trimble was a perfect 8-8 for 117 yards and three touchdowns. He also added 60 yards on just two carries with one rushing touchdown. Trimble’s day was over pretty soon as he and the majority of the Grove starters just played a little over 20 snaps in their dominating win over Jay on Friday night. They will certainly be tested a little more this week as they go on the road to take on Pryor in week three. We’ll probably see a little more production from Trimble and this Grove offense.
[player_tooltip player_id="157522" first="Chapman" last="McKown"] - 2023 Running Back - Norman North
18 Carries | 213 Yards | 3 Touchdowns
Finally getting away from the quarterbacks with Norman North junior running back [player_tooltip player_id="157522" first="Chapman" last="McKown"]. The Timberwolves have lit up the scoreboard in their first two wins. In week one, they did it in the passing game. In their win over Edmond Memorial, it was their junior running back tearing up the turf. He finished with over 200 yards and three touchdowns on just 18 carries. McKown was a prospect that we started noticing during the spring practice and team camp portion of the year. He’s off to a good start to his junior season. Combined with quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="108886" first="Gavin" last="Frakes"], the T’Wolves are going to have one of the more balanced offenses in 6A-1.
[player_tooltip player_id="101399" first="Marcus" last="Dockins Jr."] - 2022 Athlete - Moore
13 Carries | 133 Yards | 3 Catches | 70 Yards | 287 All Purpose Yards | 3 Total Touchdowns
For the second straight week, [player_tooltip player_id="101399" first="Marcus" last="Dockins Jr."] showed why he’s one of the best playmakers and incredibly versatile athletes in the state. In their win over Norman, Dockins took the opening kick back for a touchdown. By the end of the game, he added a rushing touchdown and a receiving touchdown and racked up nearly 300 total yards. We knew that Dockins would provide the Lions with some versatility and incredible playmaking ability coming into the season but he’s exceeded those expectations. He’s such a fun player to watch and has become one of those guys where if you’re an opponent, you have to hold your breath every time he touches the ball, because he could end up in the end zone.
[player_tooltip player_id="51871" first="Michael" last="Taffe"] - 2023 Running Back - Bishop McGuinness
154 All Purpose Yards | 4 Touchdowns
Very similar to Dockins, we can say the same thing about Bishop McGuinness junior running back [player_tooltip player_id="51871" first="Michael" last="Taffe"]. The Irish absolutely dominated rival Bishop Kelley on Friday night and Taffe was a gamechanger from the very beginning. He scored four touchdowns on the first eight times he touched the ball. Again, if you’re an opponent, you just close your eyes and hope every time a player like Taffe gets the ball in his hands. Just like with Dockins, whether it’s as a running back or receiver, Taffe can burn you from any position and he just needs a small opening to make you pay. In the annual "Bishop Battle", Taffe made the Comets pay immediately and frequently.
