There were a plethora of eye popping performances from some of the most electric players in the state. Who put it all out on the field and made some jaws drop in the process? This is my list of the top performers during Week 2 of the 2021 season.
- RB Tyree Trusty Tyree Trusty 5'10" | 195 lbs | RB Columbine | 2023 State CO 5’11″ 191 Columbine
The Rebels are putting together quite the two-headed monster of a backfield through two games of the 2021 season. RB Tyree Trusty Tyree Trusty 5'10" | 195 lbs | RB Columbine | 2023 State CO proved his worth in the Columbine offensive onslaught, barreling Cherokee Trail defenders left and right while rushing for an astounding 263 yards on only 12 carries and finding the end zone twice in a Columbine rout, 52-21. Trusty showed his valuable trustworthiness in the Rebels offense Thursday night, and it was his partner in crime in the backfield, RB Seth Cromwell Seth Cromwell 5'10" | 215 lbs | RB Columbine | 2022 State CO , who tacked another four touchdowns on the ground and pounded out 161 yards on 14 carries. It appears that the Rebels high octane option attack is just as effective as ever, and I expect them to be contenders by season’s end.
2. CB Donovon Gallegos Jefferson
The ballhawking sophomore cornerback from Jefferson High School was utterly unstoppable against The Pinnacle Thursday night, drawing comparisons to a soaring Eagle plucking his prey high in the clouds. This is no understatement, as Gallegos picked off four Timberwolves passes, seemingly teleporting to wherever the ball was in the air. He also showcased his elusiveness by returning his almost handful of interceptions with 57 return yards and maintaining that same quickness that puts his opposing receivers on locks. Jefferson went on to steamroll The Pinnacle 40-0, and after Gallegos’ eye popping performance in Week 2, he should be a name to look out for the rest of the campaign.
3. QB Bekkem Kritza Bekkem Kritza 6'4" | 180 lbs | QB Santa Margarita Catholic | 2025 CA 6’4″ 170 Fairview
As a freshman signal caller, QB Bekkem Kritza Bekkem Kritza 6'4" | 180 lbs | QB Santa Margarita Catholic | 2025 CA did not demonstrate an immature bone in his body, as he sliced and diced Castle View, airing it out for 357 passing yards and hitting his talented receivers for three scores on 24/48 attempts. Despite the loss to the Sabercats 38-21, Fairview could not be more ecstatic about their first year field general. Kritza displayed a strong pocket presence Friday night, avoiding sacks and keeping plays alive with his legs, thus showing flashes of his athletic promise. It is hard not to feel the enthusiasm from the Fairview camp. It appears that they’ve found their young, promising quarterback for many years to come.
4. LB Eli Espinoza 5’7″ 155 Denver North
Standing at 5’7 and weighing in at 155 pounds for 3A Denver North, LB Eli Espinoza is the definition of scrappy. A natural born pest on the gridiron, Espinoza plays like a 300 pound wildebeest instead, with little to no regard or sympathy for his football enemies. Against Lutheran, Espinoza was a human wrecking ball, breaking through the offensive line on mike linebacker blitzes and greeting the quarterback with an umwelcomned visit. His three sacks on the night was a team high despite the tough loss to Lutheran.
5. WR Josh Dunn Josh Dunn WR Broomfield | 2022 State CO 6’4″ 190 Broomfield
Broomfield loves to put the ball in their top playmaker’s hands, and it has showed through the first two games of the season. The lanky but strong Dunn is no stranger to making big time plays, as he has recorded back-to-back 100 yard receiving games and his an absolute nightmare for defensive coaches and players scheming for a way to slow down the senior wideout. Against Longmont last Friday, Dunn’s performance was effortless. It was just another day in the neighborhood, as he racked up 176 yards receiving through the air on nine catches while finding pay dirt once during the contest. Dunn even showed off his slippery moves and crisp route running by hauling in a nice 52 yard reception from junior QB Cole LaCrue Cole LaCrue 6'2" | 190 lbs | QB Broomfield | 2023 State CO . The Eagles may be 0-2 to start the young season, but there’s no doubting the playmaking ability from the skillful Josh Dunn Josh Dunn WR Broomfield | 2022 State CO .
