For the past few years, Fort Dodge has found plenty of success competing against the "big boys" in the state. Now, though, the Dodgers are filling that role as a contender in Class 4A.
Welcoming Fort Dodge to town this week will be Webster City, a prime candidate for the playoffs under legendary head coach Bob Howard since his arrival.
Separated by just a few short miles, these two have played in other sports in the past. Now, they will collide for bragging rights on the gridiron.
Here’s a look at some of the key players to watch for if you go Friday night:
[player_tooltip player_id="104716" first="Javion" last="Jondle"] - Fort Dodge - WR/DB - 6-3 - 192
In-state schools such as Iowa and Iowa State have taken note of the athletic [player_tooltip player_id="104716" first="Javion" last="Jondle"], bringing him down for official gameday visits. Jondle is a true deep threat, checking in at 6-foot-3 and 192 pounds, he has the physical tools to separate from the defender and the speed to break by a safety.
Excellent hands and the willingness to fight for the ball in coverage, Jondle has 23 receptions for 288 yards on the year. He also showcased all of his next level skills on an interception return 100 yards for a score.
[player_tooltip player_id="152539" first="Connor" last="Carver"] - Fort Dodge - QB - 6-2 - 194
It has been a nice beginning to his junior season for [player_tooltip player_id="152539" first="Connor" last="Carver"], as the Dodger quarterback has plenty of weapons to work with on offense. However, Carver’s ability to balance things out and find the open receiver is what has made him successful so far.
The 6-foot-2 Carver is completing over 62 percent of his passes for almost 800 yards with six touchdowns. He’s also showed his legs by running for three more scores.
Working under the guidance of former Dodger all-stater and Iowa State player Nik Moser, Carver should only continue to grow over the next year-plus. His ability to create, read defenses and get the ball down the field make him a strong QB1.
[player_tooltip player_id="147999" first="Jon" last="Presswood"] - Fort Dodge - RB - 5-10 - 190
After stepping in for the injured Dayson Clayton, [player_tooltip player_id="147999" first="Jon" last="Presswood"] has shouldered the offensive load out of the backfield this year. The senior already has 104 carries for 540 yards and five touchdowns, adding in five receptions for 93 yards and another score.
In this day and age, being a dual threat out of the backfield is key. And Presswood is that. He is averaging over five yards per rush and almost 19 yards per catch. With speed to burn and excellent hands, Presswood is the total package as a running back.
[player_tooltip player_id="152706" first="CJ" last="Hisler"] - Webster City - RB/S - 5-11 - 185
Webster City’s [player_tooltip player_id="152706" first="CJ" last="Hisler"] has had no trouble taking on the lead back role for the Lynx. The junior is averaging almost eight yards per carry out of the run-first system that has produced several all-staters.
Hisler, a multi-sport athlete, makes his first cut and is gone. There is no dancing around, waiting for a lane; instead, Hisler hits the hole and uses his track speed to pick up yards. He has 339 yards and three touchdowns with six receptions for 108 yards and another score.
Keegan Hisler - Webster City - RB/S - 6-0 - 175
Matching his brother on offense is Keegan Hisler, a standout defensive perform for Webster City. The 6-foot, 175-pounder is a tremendous force off the edge, racking up 4.5 sacks and 5.5 tackles for loss.
Hisler is also a dangerous kick returner, which allows him to put on display his speed and quickness. Opposing quarterbacks must know where Hisler is lining up on each down.
