Union High School accomplished their first 2-0 start since 1998 after last week’s win against Ypsilanti, while Mona Shores came in following a decisive loss to Detroit King. On all accounts, Mona Shores came in as a very heavy favorite, though trailed at the half. Let’s explore how this game turned out.
A tale of two halves
The first half was an eye-opener, as Union took a 26-14 lead with less than a minute to go in the first half. From that point on, it was all Mona Shores as they scored 42 unanswered. Hats off to Union QB Tommy Stevens as he put on a show leading his team to an early lead prior to my arrival. Though from the point I arrived, Mona Shores stepped on the gas and didn’t let up.

This final touchdown removed all doubt for Mona Shores as well as hope for Union. It was a truly impressive showing for Mona Shores coming out of the half and performing how they did. Let’s take a look at some of the best performers from the game.
Standout players
Union QB Tommy Stevens – What a performance from Tommy Stevens. He’s a bit undersized but more than makes up for that with his poise and quickness. Running the ball a whopping 24 times for 78 yards, in addition, he had 2 passing touchdowns with 178 yards passing. The second half wasn’t too kind to Stevens, but he surely got the job done in the first half.
Shores G Brayden Flanders – Flanders impressed me with his size and quickness, acting as a key lead blocker which led to multiple TD’s. Watch as Flanders makes an incredibly impressive lead block that led to a TD.

Shores RB Dahmir Farnum – An obvious leader for the Mona Shores offense, Farnum carried the load during the second half, totaling 132 yards for the entire contest. He was also a vocal leader for the offense and is an established name within the program for good reason.
Mona Shores goes on to face Zeeland West (1-1) While Union has another big test next week against Muskegon (2-1)
